First things first, Cinco De Mayo is not the Mexican Independence day. It actually commemorates the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War.
So where does chips and queso (let’s not forget the salsa!) come in? It actually isn’t a huge holiday in Mexico! Leave it to the United States to commercialize yet another holiday. That’s okay, we are here for it!
Here in the United States, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated as a commemoration of the Mexican culture and heritage. Plus, I mean – we have the BEST Cinco De Mayo memes 2024 – so there is that.

America started commercializing May 5th in the 1980s. As the Latino population continued to grow in the United States, creating a larger economic force – beer companies saw an opportunity.
We can thank the Gambrinus Group, the Texas importers of Corona and Negra Modelo for launching a marketing campaign to encouraging Mexican Americans to drink Mexican beer on the holiday.
According to CNET, in 1993 the marketing director at the Gambrinus group stated that the May 5th holiday was becoming one of the beer industry’s biggest promotions. SO yes, this Cinco de Mayo meme is really just a promotion for the beer industry.
Now I can say that Mexican restaurants, especially in Texas – benefit from this marketing push.
