Also known as the Festival of Lights, this Jewish holiday is celebrated at home by lighting the menorah, playing dreidel and eating special foods that are unique to the Hanukkah holiday.
Dreidel Meme
It’s 2024, surely we aren’t making dreidels out of clay – or are we? Jeff has them 30 for under $10, but these unfortunately aren’t made of out clay.
Who else remembers spinning the dreidel in music class?
Some people also exchange gifts after lighting the menorah.
Happy Hanukkah
Want to wish your Jewish friends a Happy Hanukkah?
Here is what Tori Avery says about the proper Hanukkah greeting.
To wish someone a Happy Hanukkah, say “Hanukkah Sameach!” (Happy Hanukkah) or simply “Chag Sameach!” (Happy Holiday). Or if you want to show off your Hebrew skills, say “Chag Urim Sameach!” (urim means “lights”).

Christmas vs Hanukkah
Anyone else who had no idea about this Jewish holiday as a child, jealous that their friends got Jewish Christmas for 8 days? My little mind hand no understanding of this holiday! Here’s more about the meanings behind the Christmas and Hanukkah holidays.
Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus. The story that Hanukkah commemorates took place more than a century before, when the Jews revolted against the the Greek King Antiochus.
Christmas is the most significant Christian observance of the year, marking the birth of Jesus. (see Christmas memes)
Hanukkah was until modern times a fairly minor Jewish observance and is not mentioned at all in the Bible. The rabbis established it much later to commemorate events that took place in the second century B.C.E.
While Christmas falls every year on December 25 of the solar calendar, Hanukkah also falls on the 25th of the month, but according to the Lunar calendar. This makes it fall on a different date each year on the secular calendar.
Hanukkah is an eight day holiday that commemorates the miracle that one vial of oil, sufficient to light the ancient Temple light for one day, burned for eight full days.
Christmas lasts just one day. You don’t see people putting out their menorahs in September, like these early Christmas memes. Christmas people be crazy! (Also, I am a crazy Christmas person, so no judgement here!)
Some Christian denominations do celebrate Christmas as a 12-day festival known as Twelvetide. Did you know the Christmas tree is a symbol of Christ? Read the origins of the Christmas tree. (see our Christmas tree memes)
