About Eleanor Roosevelt
Eleanor Roosevelt was an American political figure, diplomat, and activist who left an indelible mark on American history. Eleanor’s full name is Anna Eleanor Roosevelt. She was born on October 11, 1884 and passed November 7, 1962. She was called the “First Lady of the World” by Harry S. Truman due to her contributions to human rights.
She was the longest-serving First Lady of the United States, serving alongside her husband, Franklin D. Roosevelt, from 1933 to 1945 during his four terms in office. She was called the “First Lady of the World” by Harry S. Truman due to her contributions to human rights.
Born into a wealthy family in New York City, Roosevelt faced adversity early in life when both of her parents passed away, leaving her in the care of her grandmother.
Despite this setback, she was able to attend prestigious private schools and graduated from Vassar College in 1903. Two years later, she married Franklin D. Roosevelt, her fifth cousin, with whom she had six children.
In 1921, Franklin was diagnosed with polio, and Eleanor became his caregiver, helping him manage his illness. During this time, she became involved in politics, working for various Democratic candidates and organizations.
Her involvement in politics only grew after Franklin became President in 1933, and she became highly active as First Lady. She traveled extensively across the country, visiting government programs and meeting people from all walks of life.

Eleanor Roosevelt was a strong advocate for women’s rights and made significant contributions to gender equality.
Her actions included holding press conferences for female reporters, advocating for equal pay and workplace discrimination, supporting women’s organizations, advocating for civil rights and gender equality, educating young women about their rights and encouraging political engagement.

She also chaired the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women, which helped to improve the lives of women across the country.

Was Eleanor Roosevelt Gay?
The question of whether or not Eleanor Roosevelt was gay has been a topic of discussion and speculation for many years. While there is no definitive answer to if Eleanor Roosevelt was a lesbian, there are some facts that may suggest that she was attracted to women.
Roosevelt had a long-lasting bond with Lorena Hickok, a journalist who was significantly younger than her.
Their relationship was primarily expressed through thousands of letters that they exchanged over the years, some of which were affectionate. Roosevelt’s declarations of affection and desire to be close to Hickok could suggest that she was romantically drawn to her.
In the book Eleanor and Hick, Susan Quinn discusses what she calls the love affair that shaped a first lady.
However, it is important to keep in mind that the context of the time when these letters were written was different. It was common for women to express platonic love for each other in the early 1900s.
That said, as with each of us – sexual orientation is subjective. There is no clear-cut evidence that can confirm or deny her sexuality.
Regardless if Eleanor Roosevelt was a lesbian, straight or what have you, we do know this. She was a wise woman who advocated for social justice.
