How we make it isn’t that nutritious but it is YUMMY. But all that said, it starts with the base recipe. So let’s start there.

I wrote cook time of 20 minutes because the pressure cooker does take a while to pressurize.

Instant Pot natural release is when you let the pressure cooker decompress on it's own.

Favorite Steel Cut Oats Add-Ins

So the steel cut oats are great and healthy by themselves, but kind of boring. I don’t like boring so here are several ways to spice up your oats, both healthy and unhealthy style.

Healthy Additions

Use honey to sweeten up your oats.  Add your favorite fruit – dehydrated fruits work as well.

Kale! Just kidding, I have no idea how kale in steel cut oats would taste but I am imagine it would be gross. But everyone thinks kale = healthy, so if you are inclined – knock yourself out.

Unhealthy Additions (But Taste Amazing)

This is the steel cut oats stir ins that we suggested in the video. This also works great with oatmeal or rolled oats.

Best Steel Cut Oats Recipe

We are kind of bias but this is the best steel cuts oat recipe, why? SUGAR AND APPLES. This cinnamon apple oats mix is absolutely delicious!

steel cut oats ingredients

Our favorite is to include apple pie filling, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, vanilla, brown sugar and a tad bit of butter. Again, this is the unhealthy version so don’t judge.

Another delicious add-in for these oats is caramelized bananas and walnuts. You can do this but roasted bananas and nuts with butter, sugar and vanilla. We also add-in cinnamon because why not.

Steel Cut Oats Nutrition

Why are steel cut oats a favorite over rolled oats? It’s all about the nutrition factor. Here is are the details I dug up on steel cut oats nutrition, just in case you are into that.

Steel cut oats are low in calories. 1/4 cup of dry oats is only 100 calories, contains 2.5g of fat and is low in saturated fat. It contains no cholesterol and no sodium.

Fiber, Steel cut oats contain fiber! That 1/4 cup of dry oats also provides 5g of fiber, which is about double the amount of fiber you can get from rolled oats.

They also provide 238g of carbs and provides a healthy amount of calcium, magnesium, iron, antioxidants, and B vitamins.

I will say – the steel cut oats Instant Pot recipe I am sharing here does not really fall into the healthy category. But it does fall into the MY 4 KIDS ATE THIS FOR BREAKFAST, ASKED FOR SECONDS AND DID NOT COMPLAIN category – which for me, is a total WIN.

We Love Bob’s Red Mill

This isn’t sponsored, we just are huge fans of Bob’s Red Mill – who just happens to make Steel Cut Oats. Why do we love Bob’s? I heard Bob on How I Built This and his story is just amazing. BONUS, their steel cut oats are amazing.

A little on why we love this company – on his 81st birthday, Bob’s Red Mill founder Bob Moore gave his company to the people who helped him build it—his employees. How many companies do that? Not many.
