Create a Wireless Intercom System for Home With Alexa and Amazon Echo

Alexa Intercom Skill, YES! Did you know you can create a wireless intercom system for your home with Alexa and Amazon Echo? That’s right – you can now use the Amazon Echo or Amazon Echo Dot as an intercom and it’s wireless.

Remember the old home intercom systems. They were built into the walls of homes. We had one growing up – I so loved that thing. It even had a radio. While those are no longer really a thing, the idea of an wireless intercom system in the house with 4 kids is something that interested me.

Alexa Intercom Skill

SO when I heard about this new Alexa Intercom Skill – I was all over it. Let’s look at how you can create a wireless intercom system for your home with Alexa and Amazon Echo (or Amazon Echo Dot!)

Alexa Intercom Setup – How to Create a Wireless Intercom System with Alexa and Amazon Echo

Are you ready to setup your Amazon Echo or Amazon Echo Dot as an wireless intercom? First – I should say, you will need more than 1 Echo. We have 3 Echo Dots and an Amazon Echo in our home.

Our first problem in setting up Alexa to act as as intercom was that each of the older 2 kids had set their Dots up on their own Amazon accounts. We fixed that and reassigned their Dots to our main Amazon account, which happens to be mine.  I’ll do a how to soon on setting up an Amazon Household. This was our solution, just in case you also have this issue.

Our kids received the Echo Dots for Christmas and were to anxious to wait for us to setup their accounts – hence why we have 3 Dots on 3 networks!

Setting Up a Home Intercom System with Alexa

Setting up the Alexa and your Amazon Echo devices as an Home intercom is super easy. I’ll walk you thru the steps. Let’s start with a quick how to setup your intercom video.

Amazon Alexa Intercom Skill Setup Video

Check out our YouTube video of how to setup your Echo as an intercom.

First, you need to name each of your Amazon Echo devices. Amazon suggests doing this by name, so our main Echo we could name KITCHEN.  Each of our kids’ echo’s are setup by their name, except the littles that share – we named their’s boys.

How to Name Your Echo Devices

To name your Echo devices:

  • Open your Alexa app
  • Click on the hamburger menu in the upper left-hand corner
  • Scroll to SETTINGS
  • Click on an Echo or Echo Dot Device
  • Scroll to Device Name
  • Click edit
  • Name device
  • Click Save

And there you have it – that is how you name your Echo device!

How to Use Alexa as an Intercom System

Now that our devices are named, let’s get working on making it Alexa a wireless home intercom system.  It’s super easy to use – Amazon automatically upgrades your Echo and Echo Dot skills, whenever it rolls out a new skill. (This intercom feature is considered a skill.)

Amazon Echo on a shelf talking to alexa to use intercomNext, let’s get the Alexa Intercom Skill to work. All you have to say to either an Echo, Echo Dot or to the Amazon Alexa App  “Alexa, drop in on the ______”

So, if I want to talk to my boys using the Alexa Intercom skill, I would tell Echo –  “Alexa, drop in on the boys.” The Echo will connect, beep and light up green.  It will now let me talk to them or hear into their room.  If I want to spy on my boys to figure out what they are up to, you can do that as well. That’s what the “Alexa, drop in on the _______” does.

I remember listening into my brother’s room from our old home intercom system. Now I can do it wirelessly!

Spying on Your Kids with Echo

Something to note – when you “drop in” on a room – the Amazon device will give a chime and then a green light will rotate around the Echo, like a call is going on. So yes, you can spy on your kids – but they may catch on if they hear the noise, or see the light. BUT if your kids are like ours and deep in the throws of something – chances are they won’t notice.  Video - Video

Remember, when you drop in – if you laugh or talk, they can hear you – so be quiet if you are being sneaky.

There you have it! Pretty cool feature, right? We love our Amazon Echo devices and looking forward to the Alexa technology on many other devices in the near future.

Do you own an Amazon Echo or Echo Dot? Have you used Alexa as a home intercom system? Let us know in the comments!

Our friends at Pley recently sent us the latest Pley Disney Princess subscription box. If you have a Disney Princess fan in your house, this would make an awesome gift.

I found this photo of my daughter and teared up. It seems like just yesterday she was our Princess Z who ruled our home. She still rules the house but has dropped the princess title. She will always be our princess. For years we would buy all things, Disney Princess. Everything from her dinner plate to her pajamas featured the various princesses that she loved so much.

My Daughter the Princess

Pley sent us their Disney Princess Subscription box and woah. This is one of those things that I just wish were around when our daughter was little! Watch the video above, I had my now grown princess do the unboxing.

Ninja Coffee Maker Review on National Coffee Day

Ninja Coffee Maker Review and Celebrating National Coffee Day

Coffee is life fuel for some of us. And that some of us totally includes me.

National Coffee Day

It’s National Coffee Day!  Who know? Apparently National Coffee Day is September 29, Now you know. Some may laugh, but for those of us who use coffee as gas, today is to be celebrated. I’m celebrating today by unboxing and reviewing the Ninja Coffee Maker and sharing a few favorite coffee recipes.

First, let me say this. For year’s we used a Keurig. I loved our Keurig, but with as many people drinking coffee as we have in our house – it isn’t an affordable option. This past year, I bought a cheap, old-school coffee maker and dumped our Keurig. While I loved the idea of making a single cup of coffee whenever it just wasn’t practical for our family of 6 to purchase 2-3 boxes of K-cups each week.

Ninja Coffee Maker Review

Our friends at Shark sent over their new Ninja Coffee Maker for us to review. The main thing that I was so excited about when learning about this coffee maker, is that it allows us to do ONE CUP OF COFFEE at a time, and we don’t have to buy k-cups! Before getting my hopes up too high, I gave this device a thorough review – which you can see in the video.

Ninja Coffee Maker Review

I am totally interrupting this National Coffee Day celebration and Ninja Coffee Maker review to inform you that in January 2020, we are still using this coffee maker and still totally love it. You can now return to your blog post but did think that bit of information is helpful!

Here are the highlights of things you should know about the Ninja Coffee Maker:

No K-Cups Needed

I love that the Ninja makes a single cup of coffee for either my mug or Yeti! The best part, I can just buy a regular bag of coffee, on K-cups needed!

Glass Carafe

The glass coffee carafe is awesome (as long as my kids don’t drop it!) It pours easy, it’s heavy and catches the coffee perfectly as it drips.

Perfect Size Water Container

Okay, this may sound silly but the container that holds the water is a perfect size! With a twist, you unsnap the water container to fill-up before making your coffee. It slides perfectly into our refrigerator for easy filling.

Pretty Coffee Maker

I know some people don’t care how pretty their coffee maker is, but others do. This is a pretty coffee maker. The lines are clean and this device isn’t an eyesore (like our last coffee maker) on the counter.

Pretty Coffee MakerMultiple Ways to Make Coffee

You can make coffee a plethora of ways with a click of a button. If you want a carafe, full or half – just click a button. If you want to make coffee in your Yeti over ice, just click a button. The Ninja Coffee Maker is super simple to use with a plethora of coffee making options.

Things To Know

Ninja The Ninja Coffee Maker takes 8 minutes to brew a full carafe of coffee, 4 minutes for a half carafe and 1-2 minutes to fill a Yeti or a mug.

There is a feature that allows you to easily make your coffee over ice. The coffee maker knows how much water to add and gives you a great cup of coffee.

Do you like your coffee strong? No problem! With a click of a button, your coffee will be brewed strong. Ninja Coffee Bar Review

The Coffee Options

Here is a quick overview of what this device offers:

  • Choose a Size—Cup, Travel Mug, Half Carafe, or Full Carafe—and brew directly into your favorite cup or travel mug or use the carafe.
  • Choose a Brew—Classic, Rich, Over Ice, and Specialty—to make a variety of hot, iced, and frozen blended coffeehouse-style drinks.
  • Auto-iQ One-Touch Intelligence knows how to deliver the perfect amount of water at the right time for the size and brew type you select. No need to measure the water or refill the reservoir after every single serve brew.
  • 43 oz. Glass Carafe and Intelligent Warming Plate keep your coffee at the ideal drinking temperature with 2-hour auto shutoff.

What I Don’t Like About the Ninja Coffee Maker

There are 2 downsides that I found with the device but are totally not deal breakers.

  1. I wish the carafe held more coffee. The good news is, it’s easy to make one-off cups of coffee so this isn’t a huge downfall.
  2. The coffee maker makes a lot of steam. You have to be careful to not burn your hand by touching the top of the coffee maker while it’s making coffee.

Special thanks to Shark/Ninja sent us the Ninja Coffee Bar for review. All opinions are my own.

Grammarly – For Those Of Use Who Type Too Fast & Don’t Proofread

I admit it. I am TOTALLY one of those people who type fast and doesn’t proofread as well as I should. I am working on it people – all thanks to a tool that I found called Grammarly.

Grammarly for Typos and Proofreading

Do you know when you run across something REALLY cool and you feel like you just need the whole world to know about it? Yeah, I am that person who is texting my friends “GO SEE THIS.” or “BUY THIS.” or “DOWNLOAD THIS APP.” That’s actually why I started this blog so many years ago, as a way to streamline rather than email all of my friends constantly. (This blog is 8-years-old. Back then, it was email. Texting was still not massive and Facebook didn’t have messenger. Old school.)

Grammarly for Grammar CheckingThink of Grammarly as having a spell-check available to you whenever you need it. I can’t tell you how many times that I have typed something, for some reason this happens a lot on Facebook – and I go back hours later and WHAM, in the face TYPO. It’s like palm to the face when you see that you misspelled a super simple word.

Grammar Checker for Everyday Use

As a blogger, typos are a bigger deal and I know that numerous posts have typos. If you aren’t a blogger and are wondering why so many blogs have typos – let me spill the beans. Most bloggers nowadays use WordPress. WordPress, by default, does NOT have a built-in spell check option. You can download a plugin, but let’s face it – most bloggers don’t have it installed.

Free Grammar Check – Yes, Please.

Here is where Grammarly comes in and why it’s my new favorite add-on. Grammarly first off is free. There is a paid option if you are a hard-core writer I would suggest you get it – but for everyday use – the free version is just fine. That’s right, Grammarly offers free grammar check!

I use the Chrome extension – so whenever I am typing – like just now when I screwed up the word TYPING – it draws a little line under the word then gives me options for revising. It’s like the Word spellcheck but you aren’t

For the ADD: Shutup and tell me where to find it!

Grammar in the Work Place

If I was still in corporate America, I would invest in this grammar service. Grammarly Business is a plan for teams. Grammarly can fit into your team’s workflow perfectly because it is not limited to a single platform. The paid version offers browser extensions, MS Office Add-in and desktop apps for Windows and Mac. You can ensure that emails, documents, and even casual interactions will be clear, mistake-free, and highly impactful. Grammarly Business runs $10 per team member a month. This is a solid investment, considering not everyone is grammar savvy. Grammarly will help your team with everything from grammar 101 to colon grammar. Winning!

Perfect for Students

This application is great for students. Our kids are busy with school work. This year, with a freshman and a 7th grader – we have LOTS of paper writing and homework. While I try to proofread the kids’ homework when possible, I know for a fact Grammarly would do a better job than me.

Grammarly Review

What better way to do a Grammarly review, then to show you exactly how well this application works. For giggles, here is a screenshot of what my WordPress interface looks like as I type this.

Grammarly Review

Since finding Grammarly, I typically write my posts and then go back thru and work the revisions. Watch the video – you can see all of my flubs, misspellings, and grammar issues! No shame in my grammar game.

Grammarly App

The only issue that I am having with Grammarly is there is no Grammarly app! I need a Grammarly app to check all the things I screw up on my phone. I do a lot of work on my desktop, so at least I have it here. But just in case you are scouring the app store like I was… nope – there currently is no Grammarly app. Boo.

So there you have it, a cool find that I wanted to share with you. You can check grammarly out, here.

How to Help Houston After Hurricane Harvey

As we all process what is going on in Houston, TX with Hurricane Harvey – here is a list of the best ways to help.  Also, if you pray, continue to do so. Harvey has destroyed and caused so much damage – to make matters worse, he has not even left the building yet.

Give Money

There are numerous organizations that are doing amazing things to help those hurt and impacted by Hurricane Harvey. The best way to help is to give money.  EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS. If your bank account only allows you to give $5, that is $5 that these organizations didn’t have. If you have more and can, give. If everyone gave just a little, it would be a whole lot. Every penny counts.

While our donations are going to Red Cross, there are several organizations doing good and helping those Harvey has hurt. Here’s a great article from Texas Monthly with several ways to give.

How to Raise Money on Facebook – Use Social for Good!

Here is a simple tutorial on how to raise money on Facebook. Facebook is generating a ton of money in donations by the simple power of social sharing. Jump in on the action and use social for good! This feature costs you nothing but can create a huge ripple effect in giving!!

How to Raise Money on FacebookSupport Businesses That Give

There are so many businesses that are reaching out and doing good thru either donation or service. It so important to help these businesses know that they are doing the right thing and that you will support them in the efforts.

Here are a few businesses that we would like to give kudos to. If you own a business, consider how your business can help. Please feel free to leave any other businesses that you know are helping Hurricane Harvey survivors in the comments below.

Furniture Gallery

Have you seen the story on Mattress Mack? He is a local Houston commercial celebrity and owns a chain of Furniture Gallery stores. When the hurricane hit, he opened his doors to his furniture warehouse (reportedly costing him $30,000 a day.) This story brought us to tears. Service over self is something many of us need to learn to do. This man gets it. Watch this story, and if you are in the market for furniture, please consider buying from Furniture Gallery.

Ford Motor Company

FordFord Fund is contributing $100,000 to disaster relief efforts in Texas, following historic flooding in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. In addition, Ford Fund will match up to $50,000 in employee and dealership contributions to the Red Cross, raising potential assistance from Ford to $200,000. THANK YOU, FORD!
