Snapchat app – What is Snapchat and how to use it. You’ve asked and we listened. Here is an overview of the popular Snapchat app explaining what it is, how and why to use it. Also – we talk about if you have a teen – should you let your teen use this app.
What is Snapchat
Back story. I am standing around at a conference with a few other bloggers and there may have been some alcohol involved. One blogger says something, another blogger misunderstands and thinks the subject is sexting. Somehow this conversation led to the introduction of Snapchat.
Before I go on, I have to say – this app is clever and brilliant, except I feel totally old. This is so not my thing – the demographic is 13 years to 25 years of age, though I can see why older couples would use this.
Here is a brief explanation of what that app is:
Snapchat is the fastest way to share a moment on iPhone and Android – up to 10x faster than MMS. You control how long you want your friends to view your messages. We’ll let you know if we detect that they’ve taken a screenshot!
How to Use Snapchat
Here is a great how to use Snap chat app demo. As you can see, it totally can be used for innocent fun… read on.
I love the idea of Snapchat. What a clever way to send funny photos, but personally I like photos to keep, hence my love for Flickr and Instagram. UPDATED: Instagram now features Instagram stories as well as disappearing photos.
How to Use Snapchat Filters
Snapchat Filters are what the app is best known for. Using augmented reality, Snap really has cornered the market on created fun ways to incorporate graphics into video and photos. These are known as filters. If you are curious how to use Snapchat filters – fear not! Here is the lowdown on using filters.
In order to use the filters on your face – open up the app and make sure that the camera is pointed to you. If it isn’t, just click the button in the upper right hand corner to change from the front camera on your phone to the back camera. See your pretty face?
Now, click on your face on the screen. You will see circles swirling as the app identifies your face and it’s features. At the bottom a row of circle filters will appear. Click on each filter to choose which fits you best! Some filters work with more than one person. Some change your voice. Snap changes their filters often, so what is there today may not be there tomorrow!
A geo-filter is a filter that is only available when you are in a certain area. An example would be, if you are at a Dallas Cowboys game – check your Snap chat app and see if a Dallas Cowboy geo-filter is available. I have seen many clever uses of geo-filters, including some at weddings! (Check out My Wedding Filter)
Snapchat Emojis and Their Meanings
Snapchat emojis are totally a thing. Curious to what the symbols in Snapchat mean? They are emojis and here is a guide to using them and learning what they mean (you will see these in various places, like under your profile pic.)
Snapchat Emoji Hearts – What Do They Mean?
💛 Yellow Heart — You are #1 best friends with each other. You send the most snaps to this person, and they send the most snaps to you.
❤️ Red Heart — You have been #1 BFs with each other for two weeks straight.
💕 Pink Hearts — You have been #1 BFs with each other for two months straight. Dedication!
Snapchat Emoji Faces – What Do They Mean?
👶 Baby — You just became friends with this person on Snap!
😎 Face With Sunglasses — One of your BFFs is one of their BFFs. You will see this if you send a lot of snaps to each other.
😬 Grimacing Face — Awkward – your best friend is their best friend. You send the most snaps to that same person as they do. Awkward.
😏 Smirking Face — You are one of their best friends BUT but they are not a best friend of your’s! WEIRD. You don’t send them many snaps, but they send you a lot. (Creeper! JK – kind of.)
😊 Smiling Face — Another best friend of yours. You send this person a lot of snaps. Not your #1 BFF – but close.
Snapchat Emoji Symbols – What Do They Mean?
🔥 Fire — YOU ARE ON FIRE! Look at that snap stream. If you have snapped someone everyday and they snap you back, you will see the Snapchat fire emoji.
💯 Hundred — 100 Day Snapstreak, BABY!. The 100 emoji appears next to the fire when you snap back and forth with someone for one hundred days in a row. 100 TIMES in a ROW – uhm, addicted to snap, much?
⌛ Hourglass — Your Snapstreak is about to end – so watch out. You better send another snap to keep that Snapstreak alive.
🎂 Birthday Cake — This friend has a birthday today, so you better wish them a happy birthday. This only displays if your snap friend has the Birthday Party feature enabled in settings. So this is a lesson If you want people to acknowledge your birthday on snapchat – make sure that in the setting the Birthday Party setting is on!
Snapchat Emojis in Official Stories
Emojis that show next to Snapchat stories are used for officially verified accounts. Want an officially verified account? Keep reading.
What Does the Star Mean on Snapchat
Curious to what the star mean on Snapchat? That means that someone has replayed this person’s snap in the last 24 hours.
What Does the Purple Emoji Next to a Name Mean?
The purple emoji next to a name means – well it’s their astrological / zodiac sign! No zodiac sign next to your snap profile pic? Then you haven’t entered your birthdate.
How to Get an Officially Verified Snapchat Account
If you are looking to get an official verified Snapchat account, I have good news and bad news. Good news is if you are famous. If you are a VIP, celebrity, sports superstar or what have you – you will need to verify you identity with Snapchat in order to enable a verified Snapchat account. You will most likely need to provide some other type of evidence as to why you are worthy of the official verified status.
Now the bad news. If you aren’t VIP, chances are you won’t be getting a verified account. Snap is slowly rolling out their verified features. Remember, it always helps to know people.
Sexting and Snap Chat App
Unfortunately there are Snapchat hacks to capture snapchat photos.
The idea behind the app is the photo are only being viewed for 10 seconds or less (you choose the time, 10 seconds or less). After that time, you can’t view the photo anymore – it’s deleted from the app – and according to SnapChat deleted from their servers once a sender has viewed the image.
Search Google images for snap chat screenshots – well actually DON’T….
And this is why sexting on Snap Chat is so popular. I have had 3 conversations about SnapChat at different times and each time the word SEXTING is the key focus.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean you can’t screen shot photos from the Snap chat app. While the app does inform the sender if someone has captured a screen shot – there are other ways to take photos of Snap chat photos – nothing stops you from pulling out another camera and shooting a pic! And of course there are always hacks.
Unfortunately, teens and sexting on Snap happen. This is one of the many reasons, I don’t let my teen use this app.
What can you do if your teen is sexting? Talk to them. Our jobs as parents are to equip them for the world ahead. They need to understand the consequences – which unfortunately most teens just don’t get. Read more about Teen Sexting

The app is free and available on both iOS and Android.
In order to keep you up-to-date with the best toddler alarm clocks, we update this post regularly.
Sleep training your toddler? Check out these toddler alarm clocks that will help a child who can’t tell time understand when it’s okay to get out of bed. Parenting toddlers is all kinds of crazy if they get a little more sleep – that will give mom and dad more sleep as well!
I survived the toddler years with our 2 older kids and am now going through it now with another 2 toddlers! You can survive these years (at least, I hope – these last 2 are quite challenging.) It’s all about finding things that work for you. One of the hardest challenges when I had to get the kids to childcare and we had a strict morning routine was finding a kid-friendly alarm clock. I have had many friends recommend these and are glad to share these here. I hope they work well as you sleep train your toddler. As you transition your toddler from the crib to a big boy bed (or big girl bed), it’s time to introduce the alarm clock.
Alarm Clocks for Toddlers
Here is a round-up of the best toddler alarm clocks. This is a fabulous assortment of the clocks that have different functions to help with sleep training. Help teach your toddler how long to stay in bed when it is okay to get out of bed and some toddler alarm clocks even have a timeout time! These toddler alarm clocks serve multiple functions and are an essential during these trying years. Find one that will be the perfect addition to your kid’s room.
Okay to Wake Alarm Clock
First, let’s look at the OK to Wake toddler alarm. It is ranked 4-stars on Amazon with over 2,200 reviews! The OK to Wake clock features a color changing night-light timer teaching children to stay in bed longer in the morning so parents get more sleep (at least that’s the plan!). The clock is soft yellow night-light and glows green when it’s OK for your child to get out of bed
OK to Wake features an alarm clock with snooze, convenient nap timer, interchangeable faceplates, and fun animations that give this personality!
This is easy for parents to program – the idea is that this will grows with families by helping them get more sleep, and teach children independence and help with sleep training.
Next, we have the Teach Me Time Talking Clock. This wake up clock for toddlers is one of the best-rated kid alarm clocks with over 2,200+ reviews and a 4-star rating. With those reviews, you can say this is definitely a good choice!

For older children: Teach Me Time! Talking Alarm Clock is a fully-functional alarm clock with snooze–just like mom and dads! So this will grow with your kids!
Included is a USB cord and will need 2 AA batteries.
Let’s talk about the Echo Dot. While not this isn’t something you would think of as a traditional toddler alarm clocks – this is what we have moved to for our kids! Why? Every night since our littles were babies, we’ve had music playing in their room. With the Amazon Echo Dot – we have been able to set up a music playlist and play that for them as they go to sleep AND set up an alarm for the morning. This keeps them in bed until the alarm goes off. I do recommend locking down your Amazon Echo Dot so that you don’t have children ordering things, but it’s easy to do.
The rating on the Amazon Echo Dot is off the charts, understandably so. It’s received 4.5 stars with over 19.2k reviews! We have multiple Echo Dots and an Echo in our home and use them daily. This is definitely a tech home device that we recommend.
Here is the Glo-Clock Sleep Trainer, also known as the Argo Children’s Alarm. It features a pleasant glow of light – not to bright and the concept is unique. The stars disappear over the night, so when your child wakes up in the night, they instantly know how long they have until morning by how many stars are left. In the morning, at the designated time, the last star and the big star disappear, and the sun comes out as the face color changes to yellow. The kids know they are allowed to get up when the sun comes up.
How cool are these Boon Glo Balls? Not an alarm clock, but this will help you in your sleep training your toddlers! You can take the glow balls with you – no more dark trips to the bathroom for a potty break. Your toddler will love this clock as it also doubles as a portable nightlight. The Boon Glo Balls glow lasts for 30 minutes.
Zazoo Photo Clock
You can customize how your child wakes up with the Zazoo photo clock. Use your PhotoClock as a traditional clock with an audio alarm. The clock comes with display options that may include the time only or time and date.
There are several options for the audio alarm tone including ringing, beeping or waking to music. Use one of the pre-loaded songs for the alarm tone or wake to any song of your choice. The Zazoo photo alarm clock is also a digital photo frame!
Toddler Alarm Clock OK To Wake Owl With Night-Light & Music, Nap Timer
This cuddly OK to Wake! Owl is a night light and toddler clock in a non-traditional sense all-in-one. It has received 3.5 stars on Amazon. The OK to Wake Owl teaches kids to sleep in so you can too! OK to Wake! Owl’s face illuminates in two colors: a soft yellow glow in the evening comforts kids as they fall asleep. In the morning, Owl’s face turns green when it’s “OK to Wake!” (a time that parents can select). You kids will quickly learn the morning routine, giving parents extra sleep.
Next, this adorable Owl also plays lullabies and gives kids gentle reminders to stay in bed when its tummy is pressed at night or in the wee hours of the morning. A convenient nap timer function (up to 12 hours – that’s a LONG nap!) is another added convenience that parents love. When nap time is over, the Owl’s face glows green to show that it’s “OK to Wake!” Pressing the Owl’s tummy plays a fun wake-up tune.
With the Stoplight Sleep Enhancing Toddler Alarm Clocks toddlers know if it’s time to get up by looking at the stoplight. When the red light is on it is time to sleep – when the green light is on it is time to wake up. This color clock for toddlers is a parent favorite.
Here are some reasons this may work for your while sleep training your little:
Sleep enhancing alarm clock for kids featuring a stoplight and sculpted figure
Toddlers know if it’s time to get up by looking at the stoplight
Red light means it’s time to sleep; green light means it’s time to wake up

My 8-year-old has this and loves this, but you know who loves it more? Our toddler! While it’s not the best at teaching how to tell time, it’s perfect for an outer space bedroom. So, definitely check it out!
Next up, we have the Sleep Buddy toddler sleep training system. This toddler sleep training clock is designed to help your tot learn when he or she should stay in bed. The sleep training system includes a SleepBuddy light, a children’s book, a reward chart and a step-by-step parent’s guide to sleep training. As a result, can help you and your kid get a better nights sleep!
The My Tot Clock changes colors to teach your toddlers when to sleep and when it’s okay to wake up by using lights (blue light means sleep – yellow light means okay to wake up.)
This toddler clock also plays bedtime stories, lullabies, white noise and wake up music! With a clock face, your toddler will also be able to see the time as he learns to tell time. The lights make a great night light, as a result – this is multi-functioning! This toddler alarm clock even has a built-in timeout timer and a toddler activity manager for positive activities.
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Looking for a Halloween Nerd Costumes – well you’ve come to the right place. The infamous nerd costume is easy to do, can be done on the cheap – and who doesn’t love a geek?
In this post, we are going to show you how to make an easy and cheap DIY nerd costume (or geek costume, if that’s your preferred terminology!) Let’s get to it!
Halloween Nerd Costumes
Several years ago, my then 8-year old insisted on going as a nerd for Halloween. To put together her Halloween nerd costume, we hit up the local thrift store and scored this ensemble. Lovely, right? It was easy to do, cost minimal money and still to this day she recalls the time she went trick or treating as a nerd.
Technology is a wonderful thing. Do you know how great it is being able to access my files on my home computer, anywhere? All thanks to the the new WD My Cloud. (Keep reading, there’s a giveaway you’ll love just in time for Christmas!)
I am someone who is ALWAYS on the go. I work multiple jobs and typically have 5 balls that I am juggling in the air. It’s how I roll. That said, since I am not always in front of my computer – but need access to those files – I was left in a conundrum, or am left having to haul my laptop around everywhere. One laptop isn’t too bad to take from this place or that – but two? No thanks. They just don’t make bags big enough for two laptops. Okay, they do, it’s called luggage and I don’t care to haul around luggage.
WD My Cloud Review
Another scenario. I have a slight addiction to taking all kinds of photos on my iPhone. Yes, I have upgraded to a bigger hard drive, but as of this moment – I have over 6500 photos that I just can’t get myself to delete. WD My Cloud storage to the rescue for this issue as well.

If you were to tell me that a REFRIGERATOR could keep my family organized, well NOW I would totally believe you but before the Samsung Family Hub refrigerator came into our life I would have laughed in your face. But now that we’ve been using the Samsung Hub every single day, several times a day – I totally get it. This device is brilliant. It’s NOT just the place where our food is stored, this device has become integrated into our family lives. Who knew? NOT ME. I just thought it was going to be this gorgeous refrigerator, nope – it’s so much more.
Let’s talk about family organization. We have 6 people in our house, and a dog. My husband, myself and our 4 kids. Both my husband and I work full-time jobs and the kids, well are currently out of school for summer. To say that our lives our chaotic is an understatement.
As any parent knows, you must FEED the children. Feeding kids is easy enough, right? HA. Trying to make sure that there is enough food for 3 meals a day for our kids is a full-time job in itself. Trying to work a full day, come home exhausted and know I need to make something about of leftover ground beef and a variety of vegetables is a normal occurrence around these parts. On top of all of that, those 4 kids – all of have schedules of their own. Why do I tell you these things? Because this smart refrigerator is helping us sync and organize our family and these “issues” that I complain of.
Syncing Family Calendars
The StickiBoard app is a shared family dashboard that allows our family to keep a connected calendar everywhere, including on our refrigerator’s screen. (You read our Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator Review – right? Yes, this fridge has a 21 inch screen!) I can put down things that are happening and my husband has no excuse not to know about things because NOT only is it on the app – it’s on OUR REFRIGERATOR. Our teen and her crazy schedule, she knows it must be on the calendar or no chance in the events happening. And everyone can see everything on the fridge! Gone are the days of hanging a paper calendar with a magnet to the fridge door. HELLO to a fridge door that has a digital calendar. Brilliant, I tell you!
Meal planning is something that i totally SUCK at, but sounds good in theory and the first few days of grocery shopping – i TOTALLY can do. The good thing about having a teen is that they can help you cook. You just have to plan WHAT to cook.
On the days I remember to meal plan, I put a note into the calendar so she can see what she will be cooking for dinner. NOW, if I could just figure out how to get the fridge to remind me to actually do the meal planning….
Grocery Shopping With Minimal Calls Home
Let’s talk another issue. GROCERY SHOPPING. I can make a list and I can check it twice, but it never fails that I have to call home because a recipe I want to make requires “brown mustard.” If it’s a refrigerated item, I no longer have to call home because my REFRIGERATOR HAS CAMERAS INSIDE OF IT and I can access whats in my fridge from my phone. Nope, not kidding. Here’s a snap shot of what’s in my fridge right this moment.
This is accessed thru the Samsung Hub app.
The other cool thing, you can put digital stickers over items so you know when they go old. Have leftover pizza – put a 4 day sticker on it, so you know when its no longer good. Pretty cool, right?
Before owning this smart refrigerator, my fridge organization well… not so great. Everything was kind of shoved in and organization was pretty much non-existent. The design of the Samsung Hub Refrigerator is brilliant. There are 4 doors allowing easy access to multiple parts of the refrigerator. The bottom right door is a flex-zone. You can choose how you want to use this area. We currently are using it as additional fridge space, but we can easily make it the perfect temperature for wine, or get this – even additional freezer space if needed.
Here’s a short video to show you how the Hub stays organized:
Remember me telling you the dinner issue of needing to find something to cook with leftover ground beef and vegetables? Built into the fridge is the All Recipes app. Sure you can use this without the fridge, but it’s totally great and used all the time since it’s right on the fridge screen.
All Recipes lets you plugin a few ingredients that you have and gives you recipe ideas. There is also a huge database of other recipes, so if you know you want to make say a broccoli cheese soup but have no idea how to – let All Recipes help you out. Their recipes are crowd sourced for ratings so you know what others think of the recipe before you spend a time slaving over the stove to make it.
Grocery Shopping From Your Refrigerator
This feature is not yet available in my area, but according to the fridge it’s COMING SOON. Get this. Mastercard has partnered with grocery stores to DELIVER groceries to your house and get this – YOU CAN ORDER THE GROCERIES FROM THE FRIDGE SCREEN. That’s right, milk to your house, ordered from your refrigerator. Crazy, crazy, CRAZY! Mastercard, please hurry this up to my area. I miss the days of grocery delivery and excited to see this making a comeback, us moms need this in our lives!
Are you guilty of taking photos with your phone and then they stay on Instagram and are never printed? ME TOO. The cool thing is, you can sync your Instagram app with StickiBoard and choose which photos will display on your refrigerator.
No need for magnets! You can also upload pics thru the Samsung app to the fridge’s photo app as well. I love this feature. It’s so nice waking up, all groggy – walking to the fridge to get my iced coffee to see a fun pic from our summer vacation.
We had a sick kid this past week and talk about awesome, well not him being sick. Do you ever play Tylenol tag team? You know when you give your kid meds, then it’s your husband’s turn and he is suppose to know when you gave him meds but can’t find the paper you wrote the time down on? We had this happen this week. Instead of using paper, we are using the refrigerator to keep track of when we last gave the kid meds. So great, no magnet fiddling, the time was right there on the fridge.
Oh, Samsung Hub Smart Refrigerator – let me count the ways that I love you. I never knew a refrigerator could help get my family organized, but you did it.
