How to Connect to WIFI in the Car – 2017 Edition

How to connect WIFI in the car – so here is the deal. I originally posted this tech how to on July 23, 2012. You guys, that was 5 years ago and my how technology has changed. This post still gets quite a bit of traction so I am updating this with new content on top and you can comically read how we got WIFI in the car in 2012 at the bottom.

2017 Edition of How to Get WIFI in Your CarIn-Car WIFI in 2017

We are a family of road trippers. Last year we completed a road trip from Dallas to Colorado to Salt Lake City to Portland to San Francisco to Las Vegas and home. It was a WILD ride and did I mention that we have 4 kids? Yes, 4 kids and we lived to tell about it.

Using Mobile Hot Spot on Road Trips

Why was it amazing? Mostly because our kids were so well behaved. Again, you guys – this IS NOT something that I typically say about my children. I love them so much, but good behavior – let’s just say it’s not a strength. How we kept sane for those nearly 5,000 miles that we road tripped is by having WIFI in the car.

Each of our kids have either phones, tablets or laptops (or combination of the such.) We did NOT put limits in the car on the road trip and we had open WIFI the majority of the trip. In the Redwoods we did experience zero connection, but come on – who wants to be connected to the internet when in the Redwoods? (Okay, if you are lost that’s one thing – we were in the car.)

We used our mobile hot spots and while we did have a hefty bill from Verizon (several hundred dollars) – we did enjoy the peace and calm in the car. It was like having a nanny.

We now have T-Mobile. Our next long road trip – we won’t have to worry about the extra hotspot fees as T-Mobile has an unlimited plan we are SO thankful to have!

Side note: We believe in balance with screen time. At home we have a few policies: No Screen in the Bedroom and Screen Free Sunday. On 2 week road trips – we don’t enforce screen free time for our sanity. Parent well-being is a priority, especially when trapped in a vehicle with 4 kids!

2017 Vehicles with In-Car WIFI

In 2017, in-car WIFI has become the norm. Crazy to think how far we had to go to connect back in 2012 when now it’s built-in. It’s pricey, but convenience costs. If you are looking for a 2017 vehicle that offers in-car wifi – here is a list of vehicle brand and models to consider if that is a priority for your next car purchase:

Connect to WIFI in the Car

Connect to WIFI in the car and your road trip will never be the same!

Last week the husband took a few days off, we stuffed the car with kids, food and luggage and the family hit the road. About an hour into our road trip, the sound of kids quieted, it was just me and the husband, XM radio, a beautiful cloudy sky, the road and WIFI in the car. My heart was happy. We are fortunate to be able to road trip often, but the only reason we are able to is that my job can be done on the go. As long as I have my computer and an internet connection – I can work anywhere, even the car.

No more “are we there yet?” from the kids – they can look it where we are themselves!

Here is how we connect to WIFI in the car:

Verizon Mobile Data Hot Spot

To get WIFI in the car or WIFI anywhere, that has a good cell signal – we use the Verizon Mobile Data Hotspot on our phones. My husband sports an Android, we signed up using his phone – though I could of used it on my iPhone as well. To connect to WIFI is super simple and it runs us $20 a month. For $20 a month – the kids can all connect their devices and I can happily blog from the road! We did have a good 30 minutes of no data access when cruising through middle of no where Oklahoma, but other than that, from Dallas to Oklahoma CIty we were able to stay connected.  The kids were streaming NetFlix, my husband was listening to music thru Pandora and I was blogging away with no major lags. While it appears Verizon has done some shifting on some of their new plans (we’ve been on Verizon for 18 or so months now) – the mobile data plan is month to month, so if there is a sadmonth we aren’t road tripping – we can cancel.  If you think about how much WIFI is in a hotel room (I’ve paid up to $20 a night) – the $20 a month is a great deal. If your phone isn’t hotspot enabled, check out the various hotspot devices available that will do the same thing.  I previously used a Virgin Mobile Hotspot – here’s a little food for thought from my experience with that.

Virgin Mobile Hot Spot Review

While working in corporate America, I had a Virgin Mobile Hot Spot.  For around $25 a month, I could connect up to 5 devices – but there was a problem. The Virgin Mobile Hot Spot had to be charged and the cord was proprietary. The charge wouldn’t hold for long making the device useless. Another downside, I couldn’t get the hot spot to charge and use at the same time. Talk about dumb!

WIFI Everywhere

Before you know it, WIFI will be everywhere. Look at the way New York City phone booths are now WIFI enabled. McDonalds, Starbucks, Panera Bread – all great locations for WIFI! Now if only my car came WIFI enabled… that will be the day.

5 Tips for Surviving Toddler Haircuts

5 Tips for Surviving Toddler Haircuts

Toddler Haircuts – those words make my brain itch (yes, that’s possible – because I said so).

Both of our toddlers are in need of a haircut. This will be Zeke’s first haircut. Izaiah’s hair is looking shaggy in a not cute way, so looks like it’s time to head to the local kid hair salon for a hair whacking.

Having 3 boys with very thick hair, so needless to say I feel like we are getting haircuts every week (more like every 6 weeks). Here are some things I’ve learned along the way about surviving toddler haircuts.

5 Tips for Surviving Toddler Haircuts

Tips for Toddler Haircuts

1. Make Sure Your Toddler is Fed and Rested

A happy fed toddler is a lot easier to calm down and keep still than a tired hungry toddler. Try to bring your toddler when he is in his best mood (I see you rolling your eyes).

2. Prepare Your Toddler For the Haircut

toddler haircut needed

I have found that if I get my toddler in the right mindset for getting a hair cut, it helps a lot more than if I just spring on a surprise trip. Also, maybe not using the word “hair cut” maybe “hair trim” might make the situation better. Cut is just not a good word in a toddler’s mind.

Make the hair cut place an exciting adventure. LIE and make it the best place ever, not the germ-infested kiddie scream fest that it actually is.

3. Kids Hair Salon

We have tried several hair cut places and at the end of the day, we’re sticking to kid hair salons from now on. Yes, they do cost a bit more but the truth of the matter is, they work only with

Snip-It’s is one of the kid hair cut places we frequent.

kids and know how to handle melt downs and moving heads.  Plus, the kid hair salon we go to has a TV, videos, video games and what not to keep your child entertained. Oh and don’t forget the fun race car they get to sit in while getting their hair cut!

We took our oldest son to a generic hair cut place when he was 2. The man was SO MEAN to my son, screaming at him, and holding his head down like he was a dog. Let’s just say it didn’t end pretty. My son feared getting his hair cut for the longest time.

Call your kid hair salon and find out if they have discount days. They also offer an after-school special on certain days as well as home school discounts. We don’t home school but since we can go mid-day, we save $5 on the hair cut. $5 x 3 is $15 – and that my friends is a cute pair of flats from Target, or a manicure.

And if You Don’t Go To A Kids Salon…

If you don’t have a kids hair salon near you, or prefer to go to another hair stylist, do make the experience as fun as possible. I read somewhere a recommendation to put stickers all over your child’s clothes once they sit down for a haircut. That will help distract them for what is about to happen.

Another suggestion is to bring a Bumbo for your toddler to sit in. Make sure you hold them, but the Bumbo chairs act as a great booster, especially if the hair salon doesn’t frequent kids.

Come up with a creative way to engage your child with the water and the clippers. Tell your toddler the water is rain and the clippers are a race car. Make it fun, and silly and as painless as possible.

4. Stay With Your Child During the Hair Cuttoddler haircut tips

While your a toddler hair cut can be hell, a toddler left alone to get their hair cut is surely a frightening sight! I have multiple kids and know the pains of trying to juggle many. I make sure each child has my attention while getting a hair trim. Put the baby in the stroller, or leave her home.

It never fails that I end up holding my toddler’s head so that the hair stylist can get a somewhat straight cut around the ears and neck. Be of assistance where you can be, your toddler will appreciate you more than a stranger telling him to hold still.

5. The Art of Bribing a Toddler

I have no problems bribing my toddler. Our kid hair salon has a bucket of suckers that they keep out on the counter. If our toddler is good during his hair cut, he’ll get a sucker.
MOM CONFESSION:  In all honestly sometimes, I just stick a sucker in his mouth during the hair cut to help keep him from screaming. You gotta do what you gotta do.

DIY Toddler Haircut

Occasionally I’ll pull out the clippers and do a touch-up on the boys in-between hair cuts. With toddler hair cuts, I typically prefer to just let a professional hair dresser do it. With my daughter’s hair, I’m scarred from many years of my mom cutting my bangs too short so I always take her to a professional.

What is Minecraft? Minecraft EXPLAINED.

What is Minecraft? Minecraft EXPLAINED.

Minecraft Explained – This game has  taken over our house and this mom doesn’t like it. Yeah yeah, call me a Minecraft hater or what have you. Sure, I haven’t played so who am I to judge, right?

What I do know is that my son who is 7, my daughter who is 9 and my husband who is 36 are all obsessed with Minecraft. As an onlooker this game looks silly – but obviously, I am just not in the cool kids club because the world seems to be playing it. If you are thinking what is the point of Minecraft! This post is for you.

Minecraft 101

SO what is this a game? software? malware? Minecraft explained, that’s what we are trying to do here. Let’s see what good ol’ Wikipedia has to say about it:

Minecraft is a sandbox-building independent video game originally created by Swedish programmer Markus “Notch” Persson and now developed by his company, Mojang. In 2011, Jens Bergensten, also known by his pseudonym Jeb, took full creative control over Minecraft.

Minecraft Explained

Minecraft is focused on creativity and building, allowing players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D world. Gameplay in its commercial release has two principal modes: Survival, which requires players to acquire resources and maintain their health and hunger; and Creative, where the player has an unlimited supply of resources, the ability to fly, and no health or hunger. A third gameplay mode, named Hardcore, is essentially the same as Survival, but the difficulty is locked on the hardest setting and respawning is disabled, forcing the player to delete his or her world upon death. An outdated Classic version is also available for free, although it is no longer being developed. Creative Minecraft resembles Classic, but with many more features.

uhm. okay, that was super helpful, not. Let’s hear what Minecraft has to say about Mine craft:

Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build anything you can imagine. At night monsters come out, make sure to build a shelter before that happens.

How Many People Play Minecraft?

As of Monday September 10, 2012:

40,461,860 registered users, of which 7,358,630 (18.19%) have bought the game Minecraft

In the last 24 hours, 121,041 people registered, and 15,255 people bought the game Minecraft

Stats as of February 20, 2016:

22,628,078 people have bought the game.

In the last 24 hours, 15,294 people bought the game.

Uhm, yep! Looks like we have another Angry Birds on our hands! And this also means the Minecraft creators are RICH and rolling in money!

Is Minecraft Safe for Kids?

My husband and I are very watchful of what our children play online. Before the kids played Mine craft, my husband had already been playing. He was comfortable with them creating their own accounts and playing online. They all 3 play together at the same time the majority of the time.

I have a few friends who I would consider a lot more stricter than myself that have kids that are our age, that play as well.  Our kids are 7 and 9 that play the game.

The Power of Moms Online

The Power of Moms Online

I started this blog in 2009, and this was one of my first posts. See, in 2009 – mom bloggers and moms online were fairly new. The mommy blogging thing really hadn’t hit huge yet, but I knew it was coming. Women are powerful beings. We make the majority of the purchasing decisions, we connect and research what is best for our family. Knowing those things, I just knew that blogging would be huge and that corporate America had NO idea what was coming with this wave.

Fast forward to 2016. I can’t believe I have been blogging here for 7 years, and over 12 years counting my other blogs. I still do think that blogging is a powerful form of marketing and communications. The space is ever-changing, but so is the internet. We have numerous ways to spread our message, whether it’s thru social, video, podcasts or ebooks – we have the ability to tell anyone, anything (please use your power wisely, thanks.)

If you are considering blogging, join my new blogger mailing list. I’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest things i’ve learned over my last 12+ years of blogging.

power of moms online

Here is my post, originally posted on May 26, 2009:

Check out these stats:

  • Of the 36.2 million women actively participating in the blogosphere weekly as either publishers or readers, 46% — or just over 16.5 million — have children at home.
  • 67% of moms online look for help making a purchasing decision.
  • Overall, full-time working moms use technology at the highest rates.
  • The cell phone is the technology used most often by moms to communicate with their kids, and 80% say it is the direct line to their child and babysitter.

What happens when you gang several of us mommy bloggers together?

Remembering Maddie.

Tragedy stuck Heather Spohr’s family. Heather, a mommy blogger to little Maddie – lost her daughter in April. Mommy bloggers everywhere united and joined forces to do 2 things. Help the Spohrs and raise money for March of Dimes.
Shortly after Maddie’s passing – blogs and twitter avatars were turned purple in honor of this little girl that was just known by most from the internet.  Over $35,000 has poured in for March of Dimes. Numerous women are walking (and wearing purple) in remembrance of Maddie.

Motrin Moms. Have you heard of them?

In November 2008, Motrin launched the below commercial, aimed at Moms.  Motrin forgot 1 thing – women are sensitive.
Check out the Twitter convo (which is still going on, 7 months later) on this “Motrin Moms” commercial.

Corporate America, pay attention.

Moms are in full force. We have purchasing power and we’re raising the next generation of your consumers. Beware and be aware.
