First, Happy Groundhog Day memes. Because well, February 2 is when the tradition of pulling a groundhog out of the ground in Punxsutawney, PA to determine whether there will be an early Spring or another 6 more weeks of winter. Stupid? Yes. Funny? Also, yes.
The annual televised February 2 Groundhog ceremony features a rodent named Punxsutawney Phil. He works one day a year. Jealous of his work schedule?

Groundhog’s day is derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a that if Phil the groundhog emerge from its burrow on this day sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for six more weeks.

If Punxsutawney Phil does not see its shadow, it is because of cloudiness, spring will arrive early.

So the question is, did the Groundhog see his shadow? If he sees his shadow, 6 more weeks of winter are ahead. If the groundhog emerges from his burrow and does not see his shadow, Spring arrives early.
Of course, this is all folklore. Because, y’all. Punxsutawney Phil is a RODENT, not a meteorologist.
Hasn’t the last few years taught us anything about listening to science not noise? Kidding, kind of – but this weird groundhog tradition is still something fun in the midst of the crazy world we live in.

Famous Groundhog Dies
Update – 2/1/22: Another state that celebrates Groundhog Day is Milltown, New Jersey. Unfortunately, write before the big day, their famous groundhog Milltown Mel died. As sad as his death, this feels right on par for the crazy times we are in.
