Things Parents Need to Know About the Boo App

Here are a few things that we noticed that parents may want to know about in regards to this app.

How to Add Friends

If you go to the friends tab (the center tab with faces on the bottom of the app) – you can add friends multiple ways.

My BooCard

A Boocard is a QR code that shows, similar to that on Snapchat. Your friend can scan the Boocard (or QR code) and be taken to your profile to add you as a friend. There are easy options for saving and sharing the Boocard.

Bump to Add Friends

There is a “Bump” feature that if you enable bluetooth allows you to “bump” phones to connect with other friends IRL.

Enabling Contacts

In order to contact the people you know, Boo wants you the enable your contacts to be shared with the app. This will let you talk to people you know. Hard pass for me personally!

Something to NOTE:  In order to use your mobile contacts, the Boo app requires that you verify your phone number and enable contacts access.

Boo Premium Subscription

The Boo app has an in-app purchase option for an auto-renewing subscription called Boo Premium.

BOO PRO BOOCOINS IN APP PURCHASES

In App Subscription

Boo Premium allows you to play ad free, gives more items to have fun with, you can create your own emoji using the selfie camera and lets you personalize photos.

BooCoins In App Purhcase

BooCoins are virtual coins that you can earn or purchase in-app. These coins give you access to certain items and add-ons for your avatar.

Buying BooCoins

To buy BooCoins, click on your avatar in the upper left corner. You will see a menu – click on Top Up. Top Up is the Boocoins store.

While the prices may vary, when we looked at the app – it was approximately 99 cents fro 100 Boocoins. For $49.99, you can buy 6800 Boocoins.

Earning BooCoins

You can earn coins by logging in everyday and spinning a slot machine. These coins let you buy things in the app. For instance, I lost the first “spin” but was allowed to spin again by watching an ad. I won 20 Boocoins the second spin.

Listen, I know that many apps make their money this way – but it always kills me how the pop-ups for more options are so easy to click. These show as “locked” items – which then when you upgrade or sign up are unlocked. Something to note: there is a trial period that if your kids purchases and then forgets to cancel may cost you a pretty penny. Those trial periods can be tricky!

Here is the pricing for Boo Premium:

Stranger Danger

If you are not down with your kids talking to strangers on the internet (yes, I know it’s 2019 – doesn’t mean we don’t have to stay woke to internet weirdos!) – know that a big component of the Boo app is social. You create an avatar that uses characteristics of yourself.
