5 Tips for Better Communication in Difficult Situations

Better communication is key to getting thru difficult situations. Let’s learn 5 ways you can communicate better.

I know I am not the best communicator but over the last several years, communication has been one of the top things that I am trying to work on in my life. Let’s look at some different perspectives in regards to communication, both from a spiritual outlook and an everyday outlook.

5 Ways to Better Communicaton

Communicating with God Thru Prayer

First, lets talk spiritual communication. How great is it that our communication with God is done thru prayer. Though yes, it would be great to hear his voice – rather waiting for life to happen to see a response. But seriously.

What if everyone that we were communicating with, had the grace of God? We can only wish, right? Sorry folks, it isn’t that easy.

But what if you developed the patience aspect, it would help all conversations and communications right? One step at a time, but something to think about.

Technology Changing How We Communicate

One thing about better communication that has to be discussed is technology and how it plays such a huge role in how we deal with situations.

We have all heard and know about how the smart phone is changing how we communicate – and let’s be honest it’s not for the best. While yes, it’s easiest to communicate thru text – if there is a conversation or a situation where your message could be misunderstood – don’t send the text!

Listen, I am that person – don’t leave a voice mail or call – send me a text. That said, if a serious conversation is to be had – just say no!

if you could just text me or email me instead of call me that'd be great - office space meme

I remember the first time I heard about someone being dumped via text. Seriously??  That was a what has the world come to, moment for me!

That said, technology is a God send for churches and organizations. Remember back in the day, the old church bulletin? That is how the church use to communicate! Now between social media, text messaging and email – while there maybe more to do, the opportunity is so much greater!

Hard Conversations

If you have a hard conversation that needs to happen, the best way to have it is to just do it. It’s kind of like the bandaid thing. It’s best just to rip it off and be done with it.

5 Tips for Better Communication in Difficult Situations

Before before you have that conversation, there here are a few tips that will help you better communicate in a difficult situation.

  1. Prayer – Say a prayer before you have the hard conversation. Ask God for peace, calm and conclusion.
  2. Think Before You Speak – Think about what it is you are going to say before you actually say it. Write it down, if need be!
  3. No Texting – Save texts for simple conversations, not anything complex.
  4. Grace – Let’s throw a cliche christian thing at you, WWJD. But for reals, as he gives you grace – give that person grace.
  5. Open Mind, Open Heart & Open Ear – Go into the conversation with an open mind. It’s easy to pre-write the narrative to a situation, don’t – open your heart to the conversation. Listening is a lost art. Use your ears before your mouth, there are 2 sides to every story.

Better communication will help not only the person you are talking to, but you.

Trash In – Trash Out

Communication in difficult situations is never fun, but is a must to get thru whatever you are dealing with. A few years ago, a counselor told me this and I have used it with my kids on a regular basis.

Trash in – trash out. When something is stirring inside of you that needs to be discussed but you aren’t dealing with the situation just internalizing it – that trash is staying in.

What happens when you don’t take out the trash? It stinks. Your demeanor can change, as well as your overall attitude. Get the trash out with a healthy discussion. This has been a big thing in our family and has definitely helped with our lines of communication.
