Saturday we were in Journey’s for Kids attempting to find my growing boy’s feet some new shoes. We were on a mission to find some Toms Shoes for kids. As much as I LOVE buying online, somethings I want NOW. So we are in Journey’s for Kids adn I ask the sales dude if they had Toms shoes, he said – NO, BUT he had something just as good – Skechers.
Read the latest on this saga – Toms denounces any connection to Bob Shoes.

Toms Shoes and Sketchers BobsIn typical non-thinking Molly style, I snapped a twitpic – and tweeted out:
Skechers is copying TOMs with a line called BOBs. I asked the sales dude if this was a joke. http://twitpic.com/2nhnln
And went on my merry way. Tonight I logged on to Hootsuite to see my tweet retweeted 5 more times, by people I don’t know. Whoops. It’s funny how what you say can get tweeted and retweeted and posted on walls and yadda yadda. I mean I should know that by now RIGHT?
So I opened up the twitpic to see how many people had viewed my silly image.
380 views. AND after looking closer at the BOBS by SKECHERS twitpic I snapped – I see Soles 4 Souls logo on the tag and then I started to feel a little rotten. I hadn’t noticed that little diddy before. Why rotten? Because though I’ve never been a fan of Skechers, I’ve always been a fan of Soles4souls.
Soles 4 Souls in an amazing organization. Copied directly from their website:
Soles4Souls has given away over 10 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes (currently donating one pair every 7 seconds.) The shoes have been distributed to people in over 125 countries, including Kenya, Thailand, Nepal and the United States.
In other words. These are good people doing good work…
SO should I POUT about Soles4Souls receiving a large donation from Skechers? (Skechers you better be sharing a large sum of that profit!) OR Should I be upset with a BIG brand like Skechers finding a way to cause market?
Cause marketing or cause-related marketing refers to a type of marketing involving the cooperative efforts of a “for profit” business and a non-profit organization for mutual benefit. The term is sometimes used more broadly and generally to refer to any type of marketing effort for social and other charitable causes, including in-house marketing efforts by non-profit organizations. Cause marketing differs from corporate giving (philanthropy) as the latter generally involves a specific donation that is tax deductible, while cause marketing is a marketing relationship generally not based on a donation. (thanks wikipedia)
My knee jerk reaction to the sales dude was most likely 2 reasons.
1. BOBS is a total play off of TOMS SHOES
and
2. A few weeks ago I heard Blake Mycoskie, founder of Toms Shoes – speak a few weeks ago at the Willow Creek Leadership Summit. His company is built from the heart. He fell into the business after seeing a shoe drive first hand. Toms Shoes pays for employees to go on shoe drops after they have been with the company for 2 years. As he spoke, you could hear the passion and understand the mission behind the business. It was genuine and he’s cute. Did I say that? Anywhoo…
SO to be FAIR, I am trying to do some research to find out more about this whole thing. I have checked out Skecher’s site for BOBS by Skechers and have found nothing. I have looked on Soles for Souls site – and again nothing on this Bobs shoe partnership.
I finally found something on Journey’s For Kids site – so wondering if this is just a shoe promotion thru Journey’s for Kids…..
Canvas slipper from Skechers featuring allover sparkles and a comfy sole.
Buy a pair of BOBS and Skechers will donate a pair of shoes to a child in need through Soles4Soles!
So here I am at the end of the post.
Happy that kids will have shoes, everyone deserves SHOES.
But mad at the MAN (Skechers) who has to copy in order to compete.
Competition is good. Copying is LAME PEOPLE!
Want to help put shoes on a kids feet? Just donate your slightly used shoes! If your kids feet grow as fast as my kids feet do – you should have NO PROBLEM finding shoes that have barely been worn to drop off! Soles4Souls has a drop off location most likely near you!
Sketchers = SKETCH
The company is spelled ‘Skechers’, not ‘Sketchers’.
What a great blog! I was looking everywhere for the silver Tom's because I wanted to wear them for my wedding. My mom informed me that if I couldn't locate any, that Journey's had some made by Skechers that looked just like them. I finally saw them this weekend and was really disappointed. They look pretty much exactly the same as Tom's. And they cost quite a bit less, so that might make for a downfall at Tom's.
If you want Tom's and don't want to order online, they do sell them at Nordstrom's!
Yes, cheaper, but not impressed… Thinking Toms will do just fine, they have such a great following and a great company.
Unfortunately Nordstrom\’s didn\’t have the Toms for kids! Not sure why that is.
Nordstrom launches TOMS for kids October 23rd!!!! my husband ii have been searching! they didnt sell them previously because when they had them at first, no one bought them.
WOOHOO!
it's TOMS not tom's… it's not a guy's name. it's short for "Tomorrow".
LOL!
People have no sense of originality. Today society is all about copying someone elses idea and TRYING to make it better. This is just another example of how greedy certain companies are. Clearly they're not doing it for the money, given that they are donating shoes, but they're obviously doing it for publicity. I mean look at all the press TOMS and Blake have been getting since he started the company. I just wish people were more original. I will always be a TOMS supporter. Seriously Skechers come up with another way to help the world. This copy cat thing is just getting ridiculous!
Agree
That's the way it's been for awhile. Not to be nihilistic about it, but nothing is truly original, it's just that we keep finding better ways to do things. I'm not defending Sketchers here, I think it's pretty crappy how they've made a carbon copy of TOMS, but your lamentation about society today is pretty off base.
What's wrong with taking an idea and making it better? Isn't Netflix a better Blockbuster, the Nike Hyperdunk a better basketball shoe, and the new Beetle and better drive than the original?
Why do you have a problem with Sketches doing this for publicity? Isn't that what pretty much any charitable activity by a company about? I fail to see how that is problematic. If it helps others, why would I care if the company just wants to improve their PR?
In regards to society, I am aware of business, creative plagiarism and all that goes behind marketing.
But your examples I think are off..
Netflix is an evolved Blockbuster – different business model. (In fact after Netflix created their business, Blockbuster attempted to copy their model, and well – I don't think thats got them too far as several Blockbusters in my area have shut down.) The Nike Hyperdunk, not familiar with but that too is an evolution of something else. So yes, making it better. What Skechers is doing is taking the same shoe copying it to almost identical proportion, calling it a similar name (which is misleading) and using the original (Toms) charitable aspect. I don't see this as doing anything better.
Any company that is giving to valuable causes – I applaud you. But why not do this with their other shoes? Why create a specific line that looks identical to that of Toms and use the same marketing technique (Cause Marketing)? Because it works, that's why. And that's fine and dandy, I am just saying be original. Here's a proposition as to what Skechers could do if they really wanted to make a bang:
If Skechers was to take an idea, such as Toms – and make it better – why not up the ante and move to the Toms model – ONE FOR ONE company wide, not just a specific shoe line. Then I'll write a nice blog post about them doing something original.
That original being a BIG COMPANY who is changing their mission from profits and mass production of shoes
to
one of profits, mass production of shoes and giving a pair away for each purchased.
(In regards to company size, Toms is a growing company, started small with the concept and is growing bigger because of it, but still relatively small.)
Regardless, thanks for writing Bart. I do appreciate a good conversation. And I do wish more companies would participate in cause marketing, it's a win-win situation. Just be original!
Sketchers is the most stupidest brand of shoes!! They copy every Good named brand of shoe on the market! such as CONVERSE the ripped them off too! i think TOMS should sue for plagiarism! that is the most stupidest thing sketchers has ever done if there time of existence.
I think people should boycott sketchers and not buy the line BOBS cause they are the most pointless shoes ever!
I am happy to note that although TOMS youth shoes are more expensive than BOBS their adult sizes are actually cheaper for the "same" shoe (although only by a dollar). TOMS also has some more expensive styles that have yet to be knocked off by Skechers such as their vegan line, botas line, and wedges.
I for one will continue to support TOMS even if they do become more expensive. I agree with the sentiments on this page; Skeckers is a huge company and I appreciate seeing them give something back to the world but am simply appalled that they are allowed to just steal TOMS design. Aren't there laws against this? Isn't that why we don't see fake hand bags and the like in real stores?
I agree with you and it's unfortunate. There is creative plagiarism and then there is down right copying. I mean Target knocks off shoes all the time, but I don't know if they go as far as naming a similar name and cause.
I haven't seen a lot of press on this. You would think a good cause like this would get more if really a big shoe company like Sketchers IS indeed handling out Sketchers to underprivileged children.
This whole thing just makes me love Toms even more.
The only part of a shoe that any manufacturer is allowed to patent is the technology in the sole. Everything else is fashion, and you can’t copyright that. Imagine how horrible it would be if some high-end designer had put a copyright on the t-shirt! It doesn’t work that way, sadly.
You obviously also cannot steal a company’s logo. Even though ‘Tom’ and ‘Bob’ are both monosyllabic, male names, it’s not nearly close enough to be considered infringement.
At any rate, Skechers Bobs don’t share any copyrightable material with Toms, plain and simple. I honestly do not see what the big deal is. Shoe companies use ideas from each other ALL THE TIME, and nobody seems to get fired up. This time, Skechers happened to use the good part of an idea – and Soles4Souls is a WONDERFUL organization for such a large company to support!!
Toms has a cult following. (I’m not saying Toms wearers are in a cult; I’m saying we’re incredibly devoted and loyal to the brand). Toms will not lose any customers to this. BUT–some people who may not be aware of, or may not have access to purchase Toms might have a chance to contribute to the cause of giving shoes to people who need them now.
What’s the downside here?
I'm all for helping those less fortunate out, but come on. I've loved Toms for almost a year, I have two pair, and would have more, but they are quite expensive to a seventeen year-old with no job.
I adore the movement that Toms started and the name Bobs makes no sense at all. One, Toms is the shortening of tomorrow, as in there is always a better tomorrow. What the hell is Bobs? I have been and will always be a huge supporter of Toms because of what their goal was from the beginning.
I really don't see the problem with skechers making a knock off brand. Granted it's not original at all, it's a good idea. As much as I love them, TOMS shoes are damn expensive for a simple pair of canvas shoes. I own a pair of black canvas classics TOMS. The BOB shoes look exactly same as TOM shoes, you can barely tell the difference! I have tried a pair of the BOB shoes before, and honestly they fit better and are wayyy more comfortable. They were only 15 dollars! And secondly, why the hell does it matter that they are making a knock off brand if they do the same thing TOMS does? They give a pair to a child in need, it's not like they are keeping the money for themselves! So I think Skechers knock off brand for TOMS is a perfectly fine idea.
I agree – it's a free country – people can do what they wish, and for charity I'm all for it.
THAT being said – I just think its silly naming a shoe simliar to another that looks nearly identical and then lower pricing it.
But again – to each it's own. Let's shoe each kid in this world.
BTW – LOVE the email address -> a.s.h.o.l.e.@*******.com
I find it sketchy (pun intended) that there is no information about these supposed shoes sketchers is donating. At least w/ TOMS you know the shoes that are being given and that they're good quality, where their being given, etc. The shoes sketchers are "giving", are they the same as the ones sold? I'm all for companies becoming more one for one, which TOMS has certainly proven can be done, but did they have to blatantly copy TOMS to such an extent!! Even the tags in the same place, the front is sewn exactly the same, and they even have similar designs! And as stated above, what the heck is BOB?? I will always be loyal to TOMS and I hope future companies who take the idea, actually design their own signature style instead of copying what's out there!
I've been following TOMS and being a sole ambassador for the company since they started. I was so shocked when I saw what Skechers was doing… they must really be hurting for some market shares. The idea of helping people in need is great, but with the exact same shoe?! Come on! Be original! Maybe give some of your profits from those neato work-out shoes they advertise for so often. I was saddened and I hope that people stay true to the message and the people behind TOMS, instead of this giant corporation.
leave TOMS to do the amazingness they've been doing. knockoffs should be illegal!
Amen.
The concern should not be only about the "cause marketing" but also business practices. Skechers prides themselves in manufacturing their products overseas. "Skechers' shoes are produced overseas at factories in China, Mexico, Brazil, and Romania, which allows the company to keep the prices of its designs below those of its competitors, and are designed to appeal to younger, active, fashion-conscious consumers." And "In June, 2005, China Labor Watch released a report on factory conditions at Kingmaker Zhuhai in Zhuhai, China, where Skecher’s USA, Clarks UK and other shoes are manufactured. Footwear retailers Clarks and Skechers have been asked to address labour rights violations at a Taiwanese-owned footwear supplier in Guangdong in China which systematically hides its violations in ways that make corporate codes of conduct useless."
While TOMS are produced overseas, they not only meet local working conditional guidelines, but also have third party auditors to make sure no short cuts are taken and people are getting paid what they deserve. "[TOMS] require that the factories operate under sound labor conditions, pay fair wages and follow local labor standards. A code of conduct is signed by all factories. Our production staff routinely visits these factories to make sure they are maintaining these working standards. We also have third parties audit the factories at least once a year to ensure they adhere to proper labor regulations"
Skechers' is iconic for seeing an product, practically copying it stitch for stitch, then reducing the price through their poor production ethics and reaping the benefit of having a shoe that "does the same thing" when it couldn't be further from the truth. Sometimes if the shoe fits….maybe you shouldn't wear it.
I saw something about Bobs, and thought it was just another part of TOMS and I just now did some research on it, and can't find anything about who or where they are donating those shoes. Like you my feet will only wear toms even if bobs are cheaper…. and why bobs? I mean TOMS stands for Tomorrow, and it's not a name soo yeah,
Thanks for writing
On the Journey Kids display there was a plaque thingy that said that they were working Soles 4 Souls – though, when I researched (a few weeks ago when I wrote this) – I found jack and squat :/
This is a disgrace. Where is the creativity behind this? I appreciate the 1 for 1 originally by TOMS but this is an exact duplicate and could possibly be in danger of being sued for duplication ofcourse OR for being un-originally and lame. I've always disliked Sketchers because they looked tacky. They are cheap yes, but that says a lot about a company and quality. TOMS main goal is to give back and they are truly a non-profit organization. At first I didn't mind this Sketchers brand, but now, the brand makes me angry. I support TOMS because they produce a product that benefits people who are truly in need and their shoes above all is NOT FLASHY. In fact, they looked bumish. The quality is alright and not made to last for years but that's not what TOMS program is about.
Two thumbs up to TOMS and a million thumbs down to Sketchers BOBS. A simple advice to Sketchers, hire me as your graphic designer and I will come up with better ideas than this.
TOMS is not a non-profit organization. They are a for profit entitiy. They are here to make money.
TOM'S ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Forget Sketchers!!! Their SKETCH!
This is a great post. I actually came across this post while researching this whole BOBS and TOMS thing for a blog post I started this morning. I agree with you completely in that I'm stoked kids are getting shoes but I hate the fact that Skechers is capitalizing on it. More than anything I'm bothered the lack of originality in design and name. Again, great post, thank you.
Well said my friend. I just heard about this today. I'm doing a year of no retail shopping and blogging it, along with other ways to make simple humanitarian and ecological changes. I'll be blogging on this tomorrow for sure! http://trashsociety.com. Thanks again for such a great post!
It seems to me that if Sketchers had stuck with their own style and added a compassion line, then people might buy two pairs of compassion shoes, supporting both companies instead of having to choose which company to buy the exact same shoes from. Now they are just copycats.
Here's my blog post on the topic, and a little humor on what the Sketchers company brainstorming session might have looked like when planning this disastrous idea. http://wp.me/pKwOD-eR
I feel the necessity to correct a few comments made on this site. First of all, the shoes that are made by both companies in places like China, Mexico, Brazil, etc. are made at a cost of maybe $2.00 to $3.00 per pair of shoes and are sold for $42 to $44 dollars per pair; means that even by giving away a FREE pair by donating it; (I am sure there is a TAX DEDUCTION), both companies are making a huge profit and using Charity as a marketing means. I am all in favor of Giving to Charity, but let's not lose site of these two companies bigger picture, PROFITS! Utilizing Charity to build your company and build Profits is not against the law. I am sure Tom's owner takes out a NICE salary out of his company in the $100's of thousands and Sketchers…well there is no secret there! Both companies are pulling something that is strong to all of us….your heart strings…and making a HUGE profit.. In the countries that the shoes are made….Americans have NO IDEA how cheap and inexpensive things can be made over there with there labor wages. Don't think TJMAX; we are talking dirt cheap!!
I completely understand and agree with what your saying, but at this point, I think we shouldl take all the goodness we can get. Think about it, as a college student today I see about 500 different girls with $250 UGGS on and its probably the same situation, they're probably made for about five bucks and then sold to some Barbie Doll in America who "cant go though the fall without them!" And what is UGG doing for the world? Not much. So what if these companies are making bank? I'm sure the kid whose ever owned a pair of shoes before isn't thinking about how much money the owners making when they finally have a pair of shoes on they're feet. Lets be disappointed in sketchers lack of originality, but you can't judge a business when it's doing what its supposed to do: Make Money.
Just an FYI the reason that Bobs are called BOBS is that the name is shortened from the owner of Skechers, his name is Robert. That is the reason that they are called BOBS!
Ironic isnt it? To steal a product then name it after yourself.
so does this mean that Sketchers will give shoes to all the kiddies in foreign countries who make bobs for 10 cents a day?
I JUST saw this and I had to take a triple take! It really upset me! BOBS?! That’s not even a logical name! At least TOMS have meaning and I love buying them and wearing them wherever I go telling people to buy them. What got me most was they just said that a “Needy Kid” will get a pair donated to them. It wasn’t even about health or third world countries around the world and shoe drops.
Okay, this blog has kind of upset me. Everyone is bagging on Sketchers for “stealing” TOMS “original” idea. TOMS DID NOT COME UP WITH THE ORIGINALS! Those canvas slip-on shoes have been around WAYY BEFORE TOMS came around. They’re called Alpargatas and they’ve been made in Latin America for years! They’re most common in Argentina which is why TOMS donates to kids in Argentina. So BOTH companies (and many others I’m sure) are just re-making them. I say that if you want to help kids, just DONATE YOUR OWN SHOES to make sure the kids actually get them. End of story.
Remember the impact here. More kids getting more shoes. It is unfortunate that the shoe designs are so similar – but then again we have ‘best-practices’ for a reason. This is an inevitable consequence of consumer philanthropy – it is difficult to tease out the capitalist interest with the social mission. I would imagine that it would take more than one for-profit company to provide shoes to those in need around the world. I applaud TOMS for being a leader in this field.
What makes me mad is the fact that Sketchers is using the same shoe design. I mean they could have had there own shoes and did the same thing with the Sole4Souls. I’m a TOMS fan myself because they are Christian, well the maker is, and there is meaning behind how TOMS started. Sketchers just seems like they are in it for the money, and not because they are helping someone in need.
I feel the same way about Airwalk’s the good shoe project:
http://sweethopia.blogspot.com/2010/12/airwalk-good-shoe-project.html
I am a HUGE supporter of TOMS too! Four pairs in and trying hard not to buy the rest. Couldn’t believe how blatantly Sketchers copied not only the concept (a great one that should be copied) but the shoes… buy the original shoes!
Good points, but Tom’s are actually a knock off of these: http://www.paezshoes.com
actually they are not knockoffs their material is quite different and if you read the stuff that comes with your TOMS it says that before they started making TOMS they saw shoes in Argentina…so ya
Are you trying to say that just because they are made of different material that Toms didn’t knock off Paez because that whole statement is a bit hypocritical in my opinion. The point he was trying to make like many others have said is the TOMS creator didn’t come up with the shoe design on his own, he had an inspiration from that shoe made in Argentina, it doesn’t matter if he gave a disclaimer in the box he still got the idea from another shoe. TOMS looks just like Paez shoes just a different material like you stated. He didn’t make an original shoe so i’m still not seeing the problem with what Sketchers did.
I’m currently doing a research project on TOMS and have read that the shoes he gives are not necessarily styled the same way as the shoes you buy. Generally, they give black shoes because that’s what most children’s school uniforms ask for, and they sometimes design an entirely different shoe so that they wont stand out in their communities. So I say who gives a **** about the style, the bobs shoe is just just a stolen idea, as are multiple other knock offs, needless to say, but no other knock offs really copy an idea of a charity.
I think what TOMS is doing is great, but I don’t like that their shoes are almost entirely manufactured in China, rather than in Argentina where the shoes originated. Check out these: http://www.paezshoes.com PAEZ manufactures all of their shoes in Argentina, and have a strong commitment to fair labor and working conditions.
Personally, I would rather buy from a company that is working to support families through good working conditions and pay, rather than giving away shoes at the expense of outsourcing production to countries known to have problems with labor regulation.
awesome!
I was in Shoe Carnival and saw these horrendous knock offs! and the kicker? They are advertising buy a pair and they will send TWO pairs! that’s right they are trying to one up a charity!!!! Nice concept skechers, but maybe you should come up with your own donation program. I will stick with my TOMS.
I am a proud owner of 13 pairs of TOMS and I’m not sure what to think of BOBS. I mean if they are giving shoes to a child in need that’s GREAT! but knocking off the shoe completely is horrible. “My FEET are loyal to TOMS SHOES!(:
Seems to me if Tom’s was as socially concerned as they are portrayed, they would have challenged other companies to follow suit! I have worked with missions and non profits my entire adult life. Every organization I have worked with has tirelessly tried to duplicate themselves. Multiplying yourself and your cause gets the job done quicker. When trying to meet the needs of the suffering, competition is never an issue, if the motive is pure.
that is so dumb, dude they are both made in China you get it.
Soles 4 Souls is just as guilty as Skechers. No reason or cause gives you the right to take whats not yours.
Hahahahahha I went in to Shoe Carnival and I saw the shoe and threw it on the ground, and was like ‘WTF these are a rip off!!” The sales lady came up to me and was like “the cool things about these is that they give 2 away to a child in need” I was like “yeah, they are still a rip off”
You know that toms were not the original creators of that style of shoe it was actually a company in Argentina that started it so toms is drilling from Them as well
TOMS are so mich better!!
I heard today from an employee at Shoe Carnival, that Toms doesn’t just send shoes to children in need. U have to go online and register that u even bought the shoes. Then they will donate a pair. With Bobs …the shoes are donated without having to register online.
If you bought them in a retail store, yes. If you buy them on the TOMS website you don’t have to. I like TOMS. They are comfy. But I’d rather just donate dollars to an org than pay for the shoes.
Yes. But you can wear the amazing TOMS
DL is right. You have to actually register a code on the site, and then they send them out.
Obviously there is something deeper here – you can’t find on mention of BOBS on Skechers.com – Yet, Soles4Souls is taunting that you can buy them but provide no information. Then I decided to research Soles4Souls by pulling their information. . . funny thing is the CEO pulls 400K a year. Hmmm, . . . Granted I am sure Blake at Toms does well for himself as well, but I think they are riding on his coat tales to make a quick dollars.
Then, I saw on Soles4Souls site that Bobs went from a Buy One Give One – to a Buy One Give Two. . . . Come on really! You think Skechers would just say “For any pair of skechers we will donate one pair to a child in need”. . .
This is actually more entertaining than anything. Eitherway. . . at least everyone is trying to mean well they are just horribly creative about making it happen.
Don’t be fooled…TOMS is simply a successful business model to sell a lot of shoes and make a lot of money. These shoes are 5.00 to make (if that much in China) and should retail for 20.00-25.00. Essentially the buyer is buying two pairs, one does go to donation, but the TOMS company makes double the profit on each pair. This is a marketing ploy to sell shoes. That’s why Skechers is doing it…If you want to give…which is great…find a charity that isn’t marketing something.
Actually the shoes they give away are different and more supported so they can actually survive longer with kids who will wear them everyday. For that reason the shoe that is given away is more expensive to make. That is why they are priced as they are and of course, any business needs to make a profit in order to stay alive.
All of you need to relax! You seriously have no right to be offended. like should we be mad that world vision and compassion international both provide child sponsorship programs? How dare they copy!!!!
Personally I have never bought a pair of designer shoes, but the shoes I buy at target, payless, etc are Exact copies of designers. I don’t see a problem with that, do you??
I have purchased Toms and wondered why they are so expensive and only one child gets a pair of shoes? If other companies can partner and provide the same service in a more cost- effective manner, good for them and good for us, and good for the children benefitted!
Uh yeah.. I do see a problem.. What is the point of someone creating something just to have a large corporation knock off your stuff. Soon there will be no incentive for someone to create anything new and different. Then what will you do when payless has nobody to knock off?
You’re a fucking idiot. Excuse my language, except not really. I own TOMS, and personally, 65 dollars for a pair of shoes that were destroyed in a week was totally not worth it. Looking at BOBS, it is a better way to go. I have 3 pairs of TOMS, and that’s almost 180 American dollars down the shithole. I have Onitsuka tigers, which have lasted me almost a year. I have Sperry’s. Those have lasted over a year. I have had 3 pairs of TOMS in the past 5 months. I don’t understand any of this reasoning. It only takes about 25 dollars in total to manufacture AND send them out. I don’t see your problem with BOBS. Why try to change the world when you can’t even help out in your backyard? I have also done much charity work with internationally renowned charities, and if you wanna talk about knock off bullshit, Invisible children is the biggest I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s now a trend, as is TOMS. The workers there are rude, and inconsiderate. Open your fucking eyes you piece of shit. Care about America too, not just the 3rd world countries, sad but true. You can’t change the world without changing what’s in your backyard.
Why did you keep buying TOMS if they ‘were destroyed in a week and totally not worth it’? You obviously liked something about them.
You must be doing something wrong if your TOMS were destroyed after a mere week.. I’ve kept TOMS for over a year before and wore them almost on a daily basis.
We sell Toms in Ardmore, Ok. We have been in business for 20 years. I have never carried a line as unique as TOMS. They have actions to back up their words. We have been with them from the beginning and watch the company grow and their mission succeed. Bobs is just cashing in on their popularity. Do not buy them. Once they saturate the market and feel the trend is over the children will not receive their shoes. TOMS is in it for the long haul. I believe people understand how hard it is to start a company in every aspect. Its a shame large corporations can steal someones creativity and dreams.
Chris Ardmore, You obvioulsy know of what you speak! Thanks for telling it as it really is from the retail point of view. You obviously know how Skechers does business too. The family behind the brand is a bunch of scum bags on every level. They have no integrity or morals. I feel sorry for their wives. I’d rather be able to trust my husband than settle for his money and a shell of a relationship.
It’s true sketchers is a pile of sh!t.
Ugly copies of every other brand it their biz model.
And the owners are cheese dicks who make manhattan beach embarassed to have them here.
People who wear sketchers have bad style an are cheap.
Hahahah sketchers.
Rather go barefoot and step in turds then rep sketchers.
If you are wearing sketchers you shout “I have bad style and I am dipsh!t so watchout here my idiot ass comes”
Who cares? As long at the end of the day a needy child gets a pair of shoes(:
Who cares? As long at the end of the day a needy child gets a pair of shoes(:
I care! How do we know kids are really receiving these shoes. I want proof and then maybe I will be ok with them copying!!!
Sketchers are more likely to be giving.. according to research Sketchers has been giving shoes or the last 24 years! (:
God bless! (:
how do u know they could be just trying to be more popular
I don’t care if they “say” they do or don’t. I wont affordability I know how to give back to my community and my America. I don’t need a shoe company to “maybe” give for me. Who cares about copycats everyone (company) does it, so freaken what!!! Besides Bob’s do feel better on my 10 foot!!
Sounds like a lack of ethics to me, you and Bob’s. I would hope that Bob’s get sued and someone will see time behind bars. That is how serious I think this business model is. I urge everyone to understand that ethics is more important than saving a few pennies or even dollars. Isn’t this exactly how our recession started, with people making bad decisions that hurt the entire country.
Sue Payless too! And Old Navy for their Bensimon knock-offs!
I wear a size 10 as well and it’s really hard to find comfortable shoes… From the moment I stepped into a BOB shoe I was in-love. I could care less about the name and style being taken from Toms. Seriously, I have more important things to worry about then that. Obviously, some people need to get a life and be thankful that they can actually afford a TOM!
well then why dont u start working for them and then u will get proof!
I care! I would never be OK with this kind of business. OMG, you would care if your hard work was stolen!
What kind of business do you mean? I hope you don’t shop at Target, Macy’s, or even Safeway for that matter. Are you saying their generic products and knock offs were stolen?
Blake specifically said to steal his business model.. thats exactly what sketchers did.. They could be a little more creative but that costs money..
Yea, the business model, not the actual product.
calm down jennifer, look around you, it happens. you will see a style shoe by prada, then by coach, then by nine west, then by target, then by walmart. they will all look very similar, just different price points. even after awards shows, do u notice how a star will have on a dress, then the day after , several designers have made aa very similar dress , but at more affordable price points. it really is ok.designs can be first, but not really original.
The thing about the Skechers shoe.. is that it’s about the same price. Not at a cheaper price than TOMS.
actually the BOBS are about $14 cheaper. I know alot of ways I could spend that extra $14 bucks, especially with 3 girls. But, like I said before, reading this blog made me realize that sometimes cheaper isn’t always the right way to go:)
I agree. Most of the “lesser” companies stem from the “higher priced” companies anyway. Shall we look at Old Navy which is from Gap and Banana Republic? how many Prada look-a-likes are there? Walmart and Sam’s Club are the under the same umbrella as well. Let’s actually remember the cause behind this shoe epidemic. Also keep in mind that we are purchasing shoes that cost way more than it costs to make them just like Nike. Our children are asking for high priced shoes to be just like their friends. We want to complain about who is designing what when we have an unstable economy. Priorties people, really. If your child really needs shoes then I’m sure you should be getting them sneakers any way since at least they would have the proper shoes for PE instead of worrying about what company has replicated something another company did, which is how fashion works. Please, again, think about all those children from both companies who will be receiving shoes. Does it really matter who collects the shoes? It should matter that the companies are actually sending children shoes once a pair of their shoes is purchased.
What it says on Bobs is “Friends to Friends” not sure what that means or if that is a charitable organization.
AMEN! Love my TOMS. Just saw BOBS at Academy and I was mad! My feet belong to TOMS as well!
Neiman & whole foods sell toms ! as well as some surf shops
I own a pair of Toms and I own a pair of Bobs and I must say that the Bobs are more comfortable!!! I think that both giving a FREE pair of shoes is awesome not a problem…. The more the merrier
Do they have more of a arch support than TOMS?
girl, i got you on this one… i totally understand and thats what i say too
I bought Bob’s I wanted Toms though, gotta admit, but the only thing in the store was bobs, and they’re exactly the same! I can’t tell a difference except for the logo, so what does it matter? They both donate a pair of shoes to someone who needs it, so what does it matter?
that is so right they are practicaly the same shoe!!!
I can’t see what all the fuss is about Skecher’s “copying” Toms Bobs shoes. Shoes are being donated to the needy in either case. AND this style shoe has been around for decades – I’m having a hard time believing Toms is the one who originally designed this shoe. I would more easily believe that some Toms designer/executive saw shoes like this on vacation in Mexico or some other warm climate and thought it was a great idea.

Ok so they are stealing a good idea to make some money but they are still helping so doesn’t that still matter. All charities copy each other. They throw fundraisers, auctions, walkathons, and so on.

I do think that originality is a good thing, but come on, sketchers, a huge company is donating not only one but two pairs of shoes. Come on, give Sketchers a little bit of credit here, two pairs of shoes!!!! That is an amazing step for a huge corporation.

payless does the same thing
If BOBS wants to be like TOMS, who cares…you have UGGS and about 1000 other brands out there that look just like them…noone’s complaining about them….there are original Converse and lots of other companies are making a knock off of them as well, same with Berkinstocks…and the list goes on….
Why is no one reading this post?!
Just want to point out that HOW the shoes are made and where they come from is important. The overall mission has to be the same from the sourcing of shoe materials to the giving the shoes to the needy child. I don’t know anything about Bobs’ sourcing but if they are making their shoes for needy children in a sweatshop that employs children then this is a terrible and deceitful marketing campaign for profit NOT for the cause. (I would argue TOMS has always been a cause-driven company). So do not forget the bigger picture and do not take everything at face value. Every decision we make, especially with our consumer purchases, can help or hurt others around the world.
LONG LIVE BOBS!!!!!
Hello People! It’s called competition and it’s been happening for centuries. Get your heads out of your pretentious $@* and off of your fixies and buy some Bobs.. or better yet buy some real shoes some substantial shoes that you can walk in the rain with!
TOMS are beast, i’m NEVER getting Bobs. They make your darn feet look longer o;
TOMS are beast, i’m NEVER getting Bobs. They make your darn feet look longer o;
Bobs gives away 2 pair of shoes purchased for every 1 pair purchased…Toms…only 1
TOMS had the idea in the first place to make these shoes…and it came from the heart. BOBS…i dont know. I think it’s great that both give shoes to kids; wonderful actually. However, I remain loyal to my TOMS!
P.S….TOMS are the comfiest pair of shoes I own…and will be the comfiest pair of shoes I probably ever will own…just saying
I have always thought Toms were a “feel good only”, meaning it makes you feel like you are doing something really good. Which is true if you don’t over think it! A $3 pair of shoes, sold for $50+ should be able to net more than 1 pair of shoes for the needy. Tom’s could cut into the profit margin and throw in another pair of shoes, if their desire to get shoes on the feet of EVERYONE in need! Tom’s is actually like any other high end name brand, they are branding and the marketing scheme happens to be charity! Bob’s is only challenging the bottom line. If getting a pair of shoes on the feet of someone in need is really the motivation, you would be happy to see that happen regardless of the “name” or the “price”. Right?
Bob’s is the worst example of idea theft I have ever encountered. This retired AP English teacher sees this as an equivalent of the most obvious forms of plagiarism I have ever seen. My family and I were both angered and appalled at this blatant attempt at building a market rather than an entire project from the heart. My granddaughter and I are sick at what we saw, and we will remain completely loyal to TOMS. We have shelves of TOMS for every occasion and will verbally (though diplomatically) blast Skechers/Bobs.
Plagiarism is exactly the correct word. –An English major
My knee jerk reaction was very much the same as digital mom. I was horrified at what I saw in the local Academy store. NO, it is not enough to be giving away shoes when you STOLE the idea from Tom’s. Blake is like a hero to me. Why copy from him, why not learn from him. Academy, and other stores who choose to support this Bob’s the copycat should be ashamed of their business model. I, for one, will not be patronizing the store again. I know where my loyalty lies. With Blake.
BOBS are Ridiculous, they are just trying to be better than TOMS by giving 2 pairs of shoes. They don’t even care about the kids, they just want to be better! TOMS really means it!!! TOMS will ALWAYS be better!
Being better by “giving more” how dare they! what sacrilege! you guys are ridiculous.
Exactly, how dare they give double the shoes to charity! They should all be hunted down like the dogs that they are….trying to do good things for people in need! Let’s all boycott!
You people sound like a bunch of ignorant asses!
Okay, I work in a shoe store and TOMS are probably our biggest selling shoes. People buy them for many different reasons, some buy them because they really do like the charity, other buy them because everyone else is, and there are even a few people who buy them because they like the mission as well as the style and comfort of the shoes. Bobs vary in difference from TOMS because Bobs only donate to children in America, and (as an American) this may seem nice to have American children getting shoes and not just some kids overseas, but there are drawbacks. Children in the areas that TOMS have been sent to have no access to shoes. The reason these kids have shoes aren’t because they are poor and they can’t afford them, it’s literally because they have no place to get them from even if they did have money. Any kid in America can wash cars for a few days, then head over to the nearest Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc. and buy themselves a pair of shoes. I don’t think too highly of Bobs, just because I hate I HATE Sketchers as a brand. They knock off so many other shoe styles out there and they are probably the most unoriginal shoe company ever. Not to mention Sketchers look stupid. The only thing I can give Sketchers props for would be Twinkle Toes… Twinkle Toes are pretty freakin’ awesome, especially the light up ones.
So well put. I get great comments on my shoes everytime I wear them. People know about Toms and like them on their feet for so many reasons. Basically it all goes back to Blake and his mission and his mission statement. Good for you Mike for giving us this information.
Just because they knocked them off doesnt mean that they dont have a good purpose i mean bobs are just as great and why would you say that its okay for a kid to have to work for a piar of shoes!
cool you hate skechers as a brand, maybe because the shoes are cheaper.
i rather be smart and pay 40 for a pair of shoes of Skechers not SKETCHERS, than go pay 80.00 dollars they are both made in China anyway, and they use the same materials.
no, not the same materials. bobs uses a different fabric that is cheaper and itchy and less comfortable
They have access to shoes.
hahaha dudeeeee i love twinkle toes toooooo!
hahahhaha what u said about twinkle toes made my day hahahahha
you are an idiot
Not sure if any one has pointed this out but TOMS are a knock off themselves. These shoes have been worn in Argentina by gauchos for a very long time. Check out http://www.paezusa.com, you’ll see the shoes are almost identical and a little cheaper. So I guess in the end it is more about the mission not the originality. Personally I think both companies are a little pricey considering that you can get a good, well made pair of espadrilles from Spain for much less.
TOMS shoes are actually a copy of the type of shoes that people make in Uruguay. They are sold in the market for about $4-$5 US per pair. Are you going to stop buying from TOMS now that you know he copied his idea from a 3rd World country and is making millions?
TOMS are actually based on alpargatas, which are a common style of shoe in Argentina; however, this is the ENTIRE point of why TOMS are shaped the way they are. Blake got the inspiration for the company while in Argentina, after noticing that none of the children had shoes to protect their feet (this is also why the TOMS logo resembles an Argentinian flag).
sorry, but who makes BOB’s? children in sweatshops? sorry but they’re in need too. although TOMS are made in China, They are asked and have on their FAQ that they monitor conditions and pays of their manufacturers. Although this might not be true, it is more likely than Sketchers. AND TOMS are given to children who need shoes to stop them from contracting diseases that can kill them, not just because they don’t own them or they don’t fit right. i’m not saying that giving shoes to the US is bad…just it makes more sense to do what TOMS is doing.
As someone in the know, I thought I would educate. The Toms shoe “style” was not patented… it’s a lesson for a any brand to learn. Secondly, as the 2nd largest shoe company worldwide, Skechers is able to manufacture and distribute shoes more widely, more cost-effectively and to more places because of its buying power and distributor relationships.
The thing that bothers me most is the name. “Toms” isn’t like the name Tom, it stands for tomorrow’s shoes… Its a statement not a silly name…
how much are they
This is just stupid. We all know BOBS are a rip off of TOMS, whoever buys these is an idiot. Why not just buy the real thing. Eww my disgust… is just eww.
First of all, my feet are also loyal to Toms. Secondly, kudos to you for looking into this deeper! When I first saw the “Bobs” I was appalled and kind of wanted to slap whoever decided to do that in the face with one of those shoes. There was definitely no sign saying they donated a pair in Shoe Carnival so maybe it is a Journey’s thing. If they do really do that, that’s great. But I agree – get your own freakin’ idea Skechers! Real classy.
Its just seems to me the original design looks very similar to 17th Street Surf Shop shoes from the late 80′s. I wore them. What’s so great about them now? They are very simple styled shoes. Does make rich people look good to buy them because they are expensive and they can afford them? Probably not, probably more about being in fashion an with the in crowd. I will probably buy the BOBS because they are more comfortable and remind me of my teen years.
If they’re cheaper then toms and look exactly like toms, WHY NOT.
http://www.soles4souls.org/friends/partners.html
I wanted to buy a pair particular pair of TOMS but the shop didin’t have my size. So I went in another shop and saw they had some BOBS. They had the exact same model that I wanted in TOMS, plus they had it in m size. So BOBS just give more options when it comes to doing good in an everyday action. Otherwise, I would have simply buy a pair that does nothing for charity. I am nothing but a fan of skechers, but at the end of the day, the more important is that the result is the same.
I agree that skechers really should have come up with something more different tough…they are exactly the same….
yeah stop your whining…the money goes to a good cause…more than this stupid blurb you wrote is. There is nothing wrong with Sketchers except someone has a mad-on for the company.

I don’t see why you call it copying. Tom copied PAEZ shoes Alpargatas. So I feel as long as someone is getting shoes that is all that matters wheather TOMS or BOBS. I have all three PAEZ, TOMS, BOBS. If TOm is worried why should you?
God BLess You
Erika
I meant if TOM isn’t worried then why should we worry about just as lo ng someone gets free shoes.
I just saw my first pair of bob’s at DSW and did the same thing, snapped a picture. The box didn’t have anything about Soles for Souls on them because I too LOVE that organization and would have noticed. AND I found this post because I wanted to know the deal with Bob’s.
I wouldn’t be so pissy about it if they had actually designed a different shoe, but the SAME thing but less “cool”. No Thanks.
the message about Soles for Souls in inside the box, under the lid.
Blake could have designed a “different” shoe too, instead of copying a style of shoe that Argentinians have been wearing for centuries.
Yeah, do people not bother to read the comments. At least several people have posted comments saying that BLAKE is actually a copycat. Yet people continue to write comments like “OMG how dare Sketchers copy Toms!!!!” And why do people act like TOMS shoes are soooooo sacred. Geez. They’re just shoes.
That was Blake’s intentions!
Really, Bobs or Toms both of them are for a good cause….I was going to buy the Toms than I saw the BoBs for $20.00 less why not??? I tried them on and if you look at them the sole even look’s more sturdier. It is your choice. But I choice BOBS…AND I LOVE THEM!!!
You do realize that TOMS shoes are knockoffs themselves right? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Espadrille
And most importantly, giving TOMS shoes to people is more likely to do harm than good. http://goodintents.org/in-kind-donations/toms-shoeshttp://zacstravaganza.blogspot.com/2010/10/does-toms-cause-more-harm-than-good-by.html
http://goodintents.org/in-kind-donations/toms-shoes http://zacstravaganza.blogspot.com/2010/10/does-toms-cause-more-harm-than-good-by.html
everything is copied in retail , jewelry, purses, clothes and shoes, at different price points so that all people can afford to have something cool or pretty. look around you. i LOVE Lucky brand jewelry and fossil, well now target and claires have brands that look exactly like those brands! not a big deal, just a choice. plus bobs are a little cheaper and its the same good cause, i dig it!
plus, the toms guy got the idea when he saw shoes on a trip while out of the country, so he copied them too. it happens. actually look at the shoe, it really made like the simple, timeless , generic espadrille. its cool.
It costs like nothing to produce those shoes,. So to give one pair for each bought pair of shoe doesn’t cost them a lot of money. It’s just marketing.
My family also loyal to Toms. I just feel like Bobs are the generic version, just as good but not the same. And I think their logo is terribly tacky. Really? The same design and everything. Just different colors. Way to go Sketchers, ripping off a small (well, smaller) company to benefit yourselves. I will never purchase a pair of Bobs. I have donated 17 pairs of shoes to a child in need thru Toms since december. And I am glad about it.
I like Ombu lifestyle shoes better!
i am glad they are helping people but, that was SO not their idea… not cool.
I love toms and I leave the giving part on that mens consience
Just buy’em wear’em love’em
I was blown away when someone commented on my Toms and asked if I had ever heard of Bobs. Really?? Why doesn’t Skechers stick to what they do best, slip on awful sneakers
I can’t stand the fact that Sketchers copied TOMS. If they want to do a shoe and give a free pair to a child in need…then think of your own style of shoe…I will never never buy a pair of BOBS and have 12 pairs between my daughter and I that I have purchased from TOMS!!!!
They give Tom’s a shout out in the commercial. It’s not like they’re trying to fool anyone.
I say that with their big business, why not do this with their step-ups or something…twinkletoes or whatever they are called…it is all about the money, when you come down to it. They didn’t have to make shoes that look JUST LIKE the wonderful TOMS that I and many others have fallen in love with….

How about…Tom, you put shoes on their feet and Bob, you put food on their table.
I don’t think they should copy. If it was my company I would sue. But there both helping a child in need and thatrs what matters right? I would buy TOMS because there the original and if you know the entire story behind it, its heartwarming:)

We are starting the school shopping craze, with that means lots of money spent. I am all for buying what I can at a cheaper price, so I thought BOBS was the better buy. After reading this blog, i’ve decided TOMS is the way to go! I will further investigate into BOBS claim: giving a pair for every pair purchased in joining soles4souls. Thanks for your extra insight. On the plus side, I now have a new place to donate my 3 daughters’ gently worn shoes…that’s alot of shoes!!!
So glad you wrote this post, I actually was just watching TV and a commercial came on for Sketchers and Bob’s and I am 100% sure they said “Sketchers has partnered with Toms” on purpose to confuse people unless they really are partnered with Toms now? I even went back and listened again to it, cause I think it’s lame they copyed with Bobs too. So I googled it and found your blog, I think Sketchers shoes are SO lame. I wrote my own post on shape ups on my blog a few months ago.

I think that Sketchers’ goal was to sell “Toms” to people at a more affordable price (for those to can’t afford the real Toms). And with that another child in need gets a pair of shoes. They probably even tried to get Toms to agree to a contract with Sketchers and Toms wouldn’t agree to it, so they just came out with their own version.
I’m not saying what they did was right, but I do understand the reasoning behind it (if that is their reasoning).
I’m TOMS all the way. BOBS just make me mad. I’m glad I found your post, because it makes me feel like there is someone who agrees with me. My friends wear another type of knock off TOMS, but they don’t look exactly like TOMS. It still makes me mad, because the whole point of TOMS is one for one, but not everyone has that money to spend, but that almost makes it worse: the fact that they’re buying the shoes for status reasons. Whatever. I agree whole heartedly with TOMS’ one for one thing. I think that it is absolutely wonderful, and one day I would love to work at TOMS even if I’m an intern. Their work is inspiring.
are u really suprised? there is a knock-off of EVERYTHING
AGREED…… I was reading a news paper and one of the adds. was “Bobs” I instantly thought ” hmmm, that shoe looks like the one “Toms” makes” It sounded just like a copy of ” Toms” but with a different name….. I stand by TOMS <3
you should stand by the other brand that Toms just copy
i dont understand why your getting so upset that more people are also donating to kids IN NEED. so what if they are copying toms, bobs does the same thing for cheaper so even more people can help a child who doesnt have shoes. so stop being selfish and just acept that more people are just trying to help.

I think everyone should get over the whole hang up with the Bob’s. I don’t care if it copied the same style and you really shouldn’t either. The whole idea is that kids with no shoes …. get shoes and that is all! I think Toms should be flattered that someone thought their idea was so great that they should want to copy it. I support Toms and Bob’s. I for one think the Bob’s are more comfortable and affordable. Just glad to be helping out no matter which brand I happen to purchase. They are both helping put shoes on children that otherwise wouldn’t have any and to me that is all that matters!
I am sure that even TOM would have no problem with BOB, as it means more children get shoes. The more the merrier I say. There isn’t a monopoly on charity.
If skechers REALLY wanted to help children they should donate a pair of shoes to a child for EVERY pair of skechers sold, not only the bobs akd Toms copycat! there was no need to copy Toms style to help children! I will continue to wear genuine Toms
Why does it matter the brand name?! it is just a poularity thing again, both companies donate shoes to those in need. Some people need to think beyond the brand name & think about the less fortunate! & personally i like BOBS better, because the aren’t as narrow and tight & the sole is softer
I thought this “Screw Bobs for copying a shoe!” mentality only came from teenagers. Imagine my sadness to see a grown woman do it too. Yikes.
You do know that Toms and Skechers are affiliated on this right? It’s even mentioned on the commercials…
I think Skechers is running their usual design/ marketing strategy which is copying other’s design that succeed before.
However, for all the Amerians, TOMS just copies models, style and designs from old established companies in Argentina. What did TOMS create? A new shoe? Nop (they copy Paez). New design? Nop. Charity? Nop (they copy literally Sole4Souls)….so?
I don’t understand TOMS staunch supporters when a shoe company start to promote a charity campaign. The only thing I see TOMS did and is actually doing well is a good communication to their costumers. That’s it!
Those shoes have been around for years. They used to call them Espadrille. Its not original. The style is just coming back.
I totally agree with softballchic7 ! It doesn’t matter at all, they both donate to children, and personally I’d go with the one that’s more affordable!
Our family is also loyal to Toms- my 17 yrold daughter forbid me to even look at Bobs. If the kids are getting shoes, I will buy Toms, other people are free to buy from whoevver they wish- but Toms are our brand!!!! Besides, Sketchers always fall apart on my son.
I have two problems with “Bobs”.
One: They copied not the TOMS products. Go ahead and steal the business model, that’s great. That’s what Blake said he WANTED other businesses to do. But don’t copy the whole entire company. They have the same styles, the same patterns, the same type of name, even the flag is similar. There’s this great thing out there called ORIGINALITY and CREATIVITY. It helps. Really. Two: It is very likely that this whole thing is just a publicity stunt for Skechers. Now, I said it’s likely, not certain, because for all most of us know, they could really be doing a good thing here. However, with that being said, it really doesn’t seem that way. We’ve seen nothing that says they’re actually giving away shoes. The fact that they copied TOMS right down to the label makes me think this is just some get-rich-quick-by-taking-advantage-of-charity scheme. I want to see some proof before I believe Skechers is actually doing this to help the kids.
For now, I’m sticking with my TOMS. =D
ya’ll are gay.
I am not sure why this matters. I realize that the shoes are similar so are all brands of sneakers! I believe that soles for soles is a great idea and support it anytime I can. However, If companies are going to be accused of copying shouldn’t you accuse all companies involved in soles for soles except the original company who was contracted. To me this post just seems selfish and stuck up!!
So where do they sell Tom’s not online?
To be honest, if you want to support industry and development in developing countries- it’s more beneficial to purchase shoes made in countries of Africa or South/Central America or another country made with resources from that country. Developing countries have had their own industries obliterated by donated goods- ever wonder where the clothes that nobody wants from Goodwill-type stores goes? All those hats that are made for the losing team at championship games?
The reality is that Toms and Bobs make us feel good, we feel like we’re helping without having to question or examine the underlying reasons why there are children without shoes (and, now, without glasses). We can make a relatively cheap purchase and get all warm and fuzzy. We ignore the fact that there are cost cutting measures put in place for the components of that shoe in order to make it “acceptably” cheap for you to buy. A better model would be to support programs that increase industry in these areas which creates a cyclical change for families. As long as we maintain this sort of lopsided investment will keep the cycles of poverty prolonged just that much longer…
BOBs were made by TOMs for Sketchers … you should really do some research before you extensively rant about something
I would love to see your source on this could you forward and will post more on.. Thanks
They were? And where do you get that information from? Blake himself said they were a copy of his shoes. They are way different material than TOMS. So no, BOBS were not made by TOMS.
What a meanie why would they rip off Toms, which look WAY better
i hope sketchers goes out of business!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If BOBS would have had a different marketing approach or a
different slogan or started this company for a different, more valuable reason
rather than to just boost Sketcher sales, then I would be okay with BOBS. The
fact is that BOBS is totally stealing what TOMS has created and what TOMS
stands for. I do love the fact that more people are helping children but to do
it the way BOBS has done it is not right. They should be ashamed of the way
they started. It is sad that they cannot come up with a different more unique
way to donated. Personally I dislike BOBS because they feel and are cheap. My
little cousin had a pair for a week (which I told her not to buy them) and they
have already begun falling apart! I have had my TOMS for almost 2 years, and
besides a little dirt which you can wash off, they are still all together.
wah wah wah
All of you need to understand that Toms has partnered up with sketchers and created BOBS together, in order to give more shoes to needy children. Toms Company said it themselves that they couldn’t be happier to have partnered up with Sketchers.
actually if you google “bob knock off toms” there is a link that takes you to them specifically stating that they found out about BOBS when they saw a commercial. In fact they are quite disappointed that a large corporation felt the need to copy them.
After reading all of your shallow comments I think you all need to get a life including the crazy women who wrote this article. Who gives a crap about what brand your shoes are just be happy you have shoes.Sounds like the Toms are falling apart and you are all stupid enough to go back and re buy them again again.Im sure the maker of Toms is very happy hes found a bunch of moronic people to purchase his cheap shoes over and over again. Maybe it would pay off for you to consider buying the Bobs. You just might find they are a better shoe for the money. IMAGINE THAT!!!!!!!
NOTHING sketchers makes is well made or a good value. I have sketchers fall apart in a week!
i guess it was just THAT serious…? i assumed that bobs and toms were related b/c they share the same mission.
I don’t think I will buy a pair of sketchers ever again. The Tom’s model is a good one, I hope that more companies adopt it. Yes it is good that Sketchers is giving shoes. Honestly Tom’s will probably benefit from the publicity. Sketchers could of partnered with Toms or they could of done there own thing. It seems obvious that Sketchers does not get it, unfortunately most corporations don’t and that is why are country is where it is at. I am sure Sketchers talked to lawyers before they did this, but even if it holds up in a court of law it is still unethical.
You guys. Toms was created WAY before toms like a long time ago.
May I ask what type of shoes Sketchers gives to children in need when they sell a pair of BOBS? Are they the same ones they sold (Closed Toe with a flexible sole?) Thanks!
BOBS for Sketchers is a sub-brand for TOMS!!! Do you research!
Bobs is NOT a sub brand of toms. Bobs is a copy cat of toms , sketchers copies/steal most of their shoe designs. I like to support companies that are ORIGINAL. Toms donates money for ALL of their shoes sold (and sunglasses) sketchers ONLY donates for “bobs” shoes. so you tell me does sketchers REALLY care about donating shoes or making $?
So the brand is all you care about? Wow. Your cool. A kid is getting a pair of shoes and another thing, Toms are too much for a shoe that falls apart as fast as it does. At least bobs are cheaper AND provide shoes also.
Geez…I have way more improtant things in my day to worry about than the “appauling” way Sketchers copied another shoe. Who cares?? I have both brands and like them both. Get over yourself.
I bought a pair of Bobs (because I was told you can ONLY get them online, but found them at the mall). I took super good care of them because they were cute. Then they slowly started falling apart. Now I just cannot wear them. Same thing happened a WEEK after my friend purchased hers. I’d rather get Toms.
Have you done your research or seen any of the commercials? Toms and skechers joined together to make bob’s to do the same thing toms does.
Yes I have -> http://www.digitalmomblog.com/2011/11/04/skechers-bob-shoes-are-not-associated-with-toms-shoes/
I was so disappointed to learn that Toms are made in China. Do you know where Bobs are made?
I am skeptical about the wear of these shoes regardless of Toms or Bobs, they are fabric after all… Think it’ll last a year?
i think the bobs are great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
as long as a needy child gets shoes!!!!!!!!!! toms, bobs, ??????????? its just a name all shoe companys should do this i think!!!!!!!
Does anyone know which lasts longer? From a simple consumer standpoint I would get TOMS if they lasted longer, but if not I’ll go with BOBS
I have had a pair of Bobs for over a year – I wear them all the time! I’ve even washed them and they are in great shape! I love my Bobs! Also, as a person with big feet I like them better than Toms as they have more room.
Why hate on any good cause? Get over it. You have the right to support how you so choose. In the words of Dwight Schrute: “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”
So where are bobs shoes made? & Where are toms shoes made ?& what material is used to make them?
well I have a pair of BOBS by sketchers in the box it came in it said for everyone
purchase Sketchers will donate a pair of shoes to a pair for kids in need so yes
‘Sketchers are doing them. I don’t like people who copy. but for me I’m looking
at the big picture both companies are helping children in need. For me I don’t care
what the label is or what the company is this means more children are getting shoes.
On the actuall shoes themselfs. I have a pair of BOBS I’ve had them since August
I purchased them for school. They are worn out and dirty. I have two pairs of TOMS
now and I think that TOMS are better quailty.
You do realize TOMS shoes are knock offs of slippers. They are in absolutely no way unique.
Wait – so you think it’s all “from the heart” with TOMS? A company that sells a $44 (minimum), poorly constructed shoe that is made in China (certainly not a place known to have the best labor laws)? How high do you think their profit margins are?
OK Bobs, donate your shoes. Just donate though! Not TOMS dressed as BOBS! Dont copy another manufacturer and dont steal ideas. If your that good collect donations and donate. Don’t reel off old ideas. And your shoes suck sketchers. They’re not BOB’S they’re TOM’S.
toma are original nobody would buy bobs because ppl r going to be looking at u like”whata heck” she/he cant even afford brand names and ppl are going to tell you that toms is way better. couldnt they come up with their own idea
I work at a shoe store and I see lots of people get made about Sketchers knock of shoes. If you look at Sketchers shoes almost every shoe is an idea taken from another brand. I still have not figured out what BOBS stands for. TOMS stands for Tommorow shoes but toms has copied a shoe called Espadrilles which is made in Spain and has been around since the 10th century but they do not give anything to charity.
http://www.espadrillestore.com/login.php
These shoes have been around since the 10th Century so Toms copied them
why is it that we are not allowed to copy and steal ideas in school but then get out into the real world and its acceptable. Sketchers needs to be sued for this kind of non-sense.
#1. Who cares?
#2. It’s called capitolism. You think Tom’s is doing it ALL for charity? um no, they are making a profit, that’s how you run a business, especially since they probably pay $0.05 for the material & pay 50 5 year old chinese kids to make them at $0.25 each.
#3. Who cares?
#4. Buy some New Balance made in USA.
seriously, after you spelt “capitalism” wrong, I stopped reading your post….

The footwear is one of our most popular and is pretty hard to get a hold of in many sizes right now. (For more info…http://www.aussiesoles.com )
This piece really came at just the the right time. Thanks for posting it!
I feel that may be a fascinating aspect, it made me suppose a bit. Thanks for sparking my considering cap. Every now and then I am getting so much in a rut that I just feel like a record.
I’d like some TOMs but they don’t have any vegan ones in classic black SO I’m opting for BOBs, however I’m buying the BOBs in the “Bow Down” style which don’t look like TOMs at all. I hope they’ll come out with some vegan TOMs in classic black!
First off…nothing against Skecher’s….BUT I was also shocked when I saw someone wearing these shoes. They are a knock off and not that this is not done all the time, but it is pretty low for Skecher’s. Anyone who buys these Bob’s shoes is a joke. Pay the extra money and get the real deal…by the way…you can get the Bob’s for about half of what a pair of Tom’s costs, but who the heck would want to be caught wearing those??? I was embarrassed for the girl wearing them…so trashy!
I don’t think TOMs can really be upset with BOBs for contributing to their mission, could they?
It’s ok, I did a search because I never heard of “Tom’s” but had seen “Bob’s” by Sketcher’s. I knew there was a “knock off” happening, I wanted to know who’s the ORIGINAL. Besides the brew ha ha over who gets what, when it comes to DESIGN, I feel like a small upstart should get credit where credit is due. Really. I agree that Sketcher’s is HUGE and doesn’t need to be copy cat. I’m glad this was written, I wanted to know who was the original designer, I’m glad they are ALL donating…
these shoes have been around for years! they are just espadrilles. but i agree it shocked me to see almost an exact copy of the idea. however the guy who owns tom’s said he wished more people would do the same…
also – if it matters lol – i have both bob’s and tom’s and i actually like the bob’s better in terms of fit because the insole is thinner. i HATE thick insoles. tom’s insoles used to be thinner and i loved them back then… they got too fancy for me now though.
umm…. i really dont care about wither.. i mean seriously, shoes are shoes! ya put thum on ur feet and wa la! no gravel in ur toes… im might not be like u guys but seriously, what is wrong with ppl these days?! try starting ur own style and see if ppl catch on,,,, but sumn how it always ends up falling on whether the “popular’ ppl wear them. So get them to wear thum, and ur good to go!!!
The Bob’s are a few dollars cheaper, by the way.
I got a pair of Tom’s recently, and I really do like them.
I don’t think the Sketchers are as nice and they won’t last as long. My friend wore hers to Italy, walked around in them, everything. When she returned, her shoes were pretty much the same; just kinda smelly.
Also, the support isn’t as good; Toms, I would wear for a walk outside; Sketchers, I would not.
The Tom’s patterns and colours are nicer too; I’d shell out the extra money.
Bottom line is, I think anyone looking for a pair of shoes in that style should buy Toms, but it’s great that both companies are feeling generous and wanting to donate shoes to needy children.
Where are the shoes going, though?
Oh, by the way, the shoes my friend wore were Toms, not Bobs.
IT IS JUST SOOO STUPID! I MEAN THEY DON”T EVEN CARE ABOUT CHILDREN IN NEED! THEY JUST CARE ABOUT MOONNNEEEYYY! GOSH! AND ANYWAY! THEY IS NOOO POINT BUYING TOMS CAUSE THEY ARE LIKE 5 DOLLARS CHEAPER WORSE QUALITY AND IT WOULD BE EMBARRASING TO WEAR SKETCHERS CAUSE THEY ARE SUCH A STUPID CARELESS COMPANY! THEY DON”T EVEN GOOOO TO THE COUNTRY TO GIVE THE SHOES> THE GET SOLES4SOLES TO DO IT! I HOPE NOOO ONE BUYS BOBS
I love TOMS!!!!! Me and my friends wear them all the time! My english teacher asked us about them since like everyone at my school wears them (jr. high, so everyone just cares about brand names) and we were like “try ours on!!” and she absolutely loved them! my english teacher bought 5 pairs of TOMS online THAT NIGHT! then the next weekend she bought 2 more. she wears them everyday. its so funny!
i just got done watching the “bobs” commercial in my living room and that was the first i had heard of them. immediatley i busted out in laughter. at first i honestly thought it was a funny joke on skechers part but at the end of the commercial, they were still serious. i thought it was also funny that the even incorporated similar lines and the tops and bottom of the name. i couldn’t believe it. how could someone be so fake to not only make a somewhat similar name, but take the design completely. what a crack!…i think the only word that can be used to describe this play by skechers would be ‘desperate’. i don’t even wear tom’s (because i’m a guy and they are highly metrosexual on men i think) and i thought this was rediculous. and i also wanted to address the people that put things like “i don’t care” or get over it” with an open ended question. ‘Then why did you leave a comment on this blog if you don’t car?’ -rob
Okay, I know that BOBS and TOMS both give shoes to people in Africa, but…TOMS was doing great on there own, why cant people come up with there shoes? I care. I will not pay for BOBS. If half of my money is going to Africa to support kids in Africa with no shoes, then the other half has to go to a company who deserves it. TOMS does. They have been working harder then BOBS to get where they are know, and TOMS was founded in 2006, BOBS 2010. I want to give my support to TOMS, not BOBS. Companys shouldnt be copied like that. I support both of there cause 100% but, I like TOMS better and always will.
I just saw an add for this on TV. At first I was furious that Skechers (the same company made shape-ups, one of the WORST THINGS you could put on your foot) copied the concept of TOMS. But I have reconsidered sense then, and honestly a child is still getting shoes, the mission of TOMS. They originally said that they wanted others to follow their new style of business, while this is NOT what they had in mind, its stil charity, and the hate over BOBS to this extent is just sad. Grow up people. If you like TOMS better because of loyalty or something else, great. If you like BOBS better because they’re affordable or some other reason, great.
Just a few more rants:1. To people who are saying that the product is made in some shit-hole in China, you are probably wrong. My mother worked as one of the heads of merchandise for Disney, and she personally traveld to their factories in China about once a year to make sure it was ethical (don’t haze be based on your definition, but the main thing she looked to dodge as far as I remember was child labor and inhumane treatment of workers) conditions. A major company can’t afford a slip up as bad as media saying you support brutal child labor.2. To be fair though, China is an absolute shit-hole, and I apologize if my first rant sounds like I am defending China. It is one of the few totalitarian dictatorships left on the planet, and it executes more of it’s own subjects (lets be honest: I would be lying if I called them “citizens”) than every other nation combined. The fact that we so blindly give so much support to them is down right sickening. Their are better countries, like India (which has MILLIONS of unemployed)…3. …Or even better, the product could be made in the country you intend to support. A community is built on solid infrastructure, not outside support. A person can do A LOT more with a JOB then he can with some new SHOES, like buying the shoes from the LOCAL sources, feeding the money right back into the community. (thank you Dustin for the link! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isxxQm2_ud0 )
4. For the love of god, stop trying to justify the shape of the shoe and that TOMS is also unoriginal. None of us are mad that they made a similar looking shoe, were mad that they stole the concept completely.
This is my own opinion on the matter, feel free to disagree with me, as you have the right to your own.
i love that kids who don’t have shoes are getting shoes but seriously sketchers has made a mock off of every shoe business i think they need to come up with there own ideas its not that hard just saying.
Bob r so much better because they r low and cute
Toms are just alpargatas, so it’s not like toms are original either… they’re exactly the same as what we’ve been wearing in argentina for generations, someone just decided to make a profit with them, and exported work worldwide, stealing money from honest workers by taking the jobs to places where they can pay less for more, all the while giving children shoes. I’ll never buy toms. I would much rather have Paez alpargatas… or hand woven alpargatas, than toms.
