Insomnia is a symptom[1] of a sleeping disorder characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep despite the opportunity. Insomnia is a symptom, not a stand-alone diagnosis or a disease. By definition, insomnia is “difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or both” and it may be due to inadequate quality or quantity of sleep. It is typically followed by functional impairment while awake. Insomniacs have been known to complain about being unable to close their eyes or “rest their mind” for more than a few minutes at a time. Both organic and non-organic insomnia constitute a sleep disorder.[2]

UGH.  I cannot sleep. Talk about wanting to poke my eyeballs out. I have to be up in 4 hours and out of the house in 5.  Laying here for the last 5 hours, tossing and turning, watching everything imaginable on On Demand – I just want to sleep!

Giving up on the computer keeping me entertained (again, this is the 3rd time i’m closing the laptop).

Wishing for some sleep. Tomorrow is Monday for Christ’s sake!

Cute cartoon but it’s not all that clever because when people count sheep they aren’t actually thinking about eating the sheep, just counting them. So in order to make sense there would need to be a logical inverse or satire that matches. But in this case there is no actual logic. Anyhoo, Insomnia does suck. I’ve had it all my life. A pet Peeve of mine is when people give me their advice about sleep hygiene that we already know, like: not drinking coffee before bed, or making sure we have a comfy bed, don’t sleep with bright lights on, go to be tired. etc etc etc. or they falsely accuse me of sleeping in too late and that is why I can’t sleep. I may be in bed late some mornings but that is only because there are times the insomnia has got so bad I am weak. We do go to bed very tired and worn out but we don’t react to normal sleep hygiene like most people do. A lot of people tend to give us advice about stuff they don’t actually understand as if they have a PhD when they don’t.
