Saying NO To Mindless TV!

Mindless TV

With kid #1 and kid #2, the first few months were spent holed up in the bedroom watching mindless TV in a sleepless induced trance. I jokingly told my husband a few months ago, PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW ME TO GET HOOKED ON SOAPS AGAIN when the baby arrives.

Well here we are. Bambino has arrived. Our bedroom looks like a make-shift nursery with pack and play, swing and boppy laying next to me. I refuse to give into you mindless afternoon television. I watched enough stupid court television in the hospital last week – to know that this is not how I will be spending the next several weeks off from work.

Seth Godin *cue music that signifies AWESOMENESS* wrote a fabulous post on "But it’s better than TV". I am so glad I found this. Here are Seth’s suggestions on what to do, rather than tuning in:

    • Run a little store on eBay
    • Write a daily blog
    • Write a novel
    • Start an online community about your favorite passion
    • Go to meetups in your town
    • Volunteer to tutor a kid, in person or online
    • Learn a new language, verbal or programming
    • Write hand written thank you notes each evening to people who helped you out or did a good job
    • Produce small films and publish them online
    • Listen to the one thousand most important operas
    • Read a book or two every evening
    • Play a game of Scrabble with your family

None of them are perfect. Each of them are better than TV.

It’s only the 2nd week of maternity leave, but I want to make sure when I’m not bonding and spending time with baby that the time is spent well.

  • I’ve committed to blogging regularly
  • Bargain Mama will come out of her sabatical
  • I’ve created a list of new blogs to tune into with various interests, not just work-related
  • I plan on learning Magento and Buddy Press – I can’t let my geek skills die out while I’m off of work!
  • I’ve volunteered for the web team at church
  • I WILL finish these 2 books sitting on my nightstand
  • Rather than Scrabble – i’ll play Words With Friends with my family and friends (but not over-do it. 10 games maximum open at once!)
  • I’ll schedule time to catch up with my stay at home friends
  • I’ve cracked out the camera and plan to capture as many moments as I can with this little fellow before he grows up!

sweetness

But most important I plan on spending time with this little heart melter and my other 2 lovies. It’s weird but wonderful being able to set new priorities in my life outside of the rat race and the daily grind of work. As much as I have a passion for my career, I must make sure my priorities are in order, mindless daytime television not being one of them!

RANDOM FACT: Judge Judy’s salary is $45 million a year. Maybe rather than watching her, I should figure out how to become her. $45 million… wowzerz.

Going Beyond What You Are Told To Do…

Beyond What Are You Told To Do

Last week, the greatest thing happened to me as a manager. An employee emailed and said "I’ve been reading Seth Godin’s blog and realize that i’ve just been doing what i’ve been told to do. Here is a creative dump of what we can do."

I have a great team, who gives it their all. We produce a LOT of work with minimal staff and budgets. Reading this email it hit me – she gets it. It’s about owning your work – seeing the big picture, casting a vision and pursuing what it takes without relying on your boss to tell you what to do.

If you don’t know Seth Godin – meet him here. He is a fabulous thinker, communicator who I preach probebly a little too much.

Planning a Maternity Leave

I'm Going on Maternity Leave

In the next 17 days, our life will be flipped upside down with the addition of our little baby I. At home, I am nesting like a mad woman, donating, trashing, recycling and passing down everything from clothes, toys, book and misc household goods. The house is being cleaned from top to bottom. The dogs are scheduled for grooming. The carpets are in need of steaming and the car needs detailing.

The funny thing is, this time around Sean (baby daddy) is nesting as well. At 11:30 one work night a few weeks back, I went downstairs to find him cleaning out the garage. He’s put the nursery components together. He’s assisted me in making sure all the laundry is caught up and all the household maintenanve is up to date. I knew I married him for a reason. After 2 pregnancies, he knows my needs and my insaneness and still loves me. I guess he did get me into this :)

If I could sell this energy and my new ability to do so much mentally – I could make millions. I’ve began thinking that this broken toe is God’s way of keeping me from going into extra overdrive. While I would love to say that this is just going on at home – it is unfortunately the same way at work. I am a recovered people pleaser – but some tendencies remain – such as inconviencing anyone when I can help avoid that. Let me say this – one of my strengths is strategy. With that being said and knowing that I will be away from work for 10 weeks – I have been working on a master maternity leave plan.

This leave will be different from the last 2. The first leave I was back working after 6 weeks. The second, I was contract and was back working after 2 weeks. This being number 3 and me now working in the office – I knew I needed more time off than that. While I would love to be able to honestly say I don’t get sucked into my job – that would be a lie. This little baby is sent here for something, maybe just maybe helping me refocus on my life priorities – God, Family and then work.

Fortunately for my A.D.D. my job has several responsibilites. Unfortunately – this makes my leave more difficult than bringing in a contractor to cover my job.

I am very fortunate to work for a highly oiled machine of a company. We get things done with minimal staff. Every move is very agile. Each employee is dedicated to the success of keeping the train moving. If someone falls, there is someone else there to help them up. This is reassuring but also makes me want to ensure nothing falls thru the cracks.

While I am no means saying this is the answer for everyone – here are a few action items we’ve adapted and morphed to make sure keep the train churning:

What is on the businesses calendar for duration of your leave? What action items are involved during that time?

This part of planning has been a little hairy. Our business is that of holding live events and it just so happens our event season starts right before my departure. I started by reviewing last year’s plan, evaluated what we wanted to do new, updated our master grid and met with the team to get things in motion.

Empowering the people

I have a great team who would let me throw the world’s weight on to their shoulders and they would manage to still smile. I’m too nice to do that. But, in reviewing what we needed while I am out – utilizing internal resources and empowering the current staff let’s them rise up to a new challenge. We have found a way to bring in extra production help and give more of my work load to the team.

When it boiled down to it – my team knows our business more than any contractor could learn over a few weeks time. Each member took on their area of strength and will be working on those areas for me while out.

Do a 360 eval of your responsibilities – identify each and determine who in the company can handle what

This can be as simple as, signing off on invoices and timesheets – or as complicated as who can make mangerial decisions.

Educating others in the company

The digital team acts as both as a creative and services department. We work with each department in the company in some capacity. Ensuring that each department has a simplified way to still get things done is key. In order to keep things simple, we have setup a distribution list for anyone in the company to email. This email list distributes to each team member. The team each knows who handles what and addresses that issue. This also works well should someone be out – another team member can pick up the issue.

Who – What – When – Where – Why – How

I have at least 5 new projects in the works. While I would love to say these will all wrap before this kid arrives – I’m pretty sure that something is going to stall or something will occur that is out of my control. To eliminate too many questions and/or concerns, each project now has a simple document outlining the who, what, when, where, why and how.

Who
– who am I working with on the project and how to contact
What
– what exactly the project is
When
– when is the anticipated launch or plan for executing
Where – where is the location of any files or where the action items need to happen
Why – why is exactly that. I find that including the why helps eliminate questions
How – how is how this is executed to make this happen

By doing this – anyone on my team, though they may not know what the project is about – they will now know the basics and who to contact to make sure everything is complete.

Removing myself from the loop

With the processes above set in place, nothing is perfect. Starting today, I am removing myself from the loop. Other teams will start emailing the distribution list rather than myself. My VP will now meet with my team rather than just myself to go over anything new. Any issues that come about, my team will handle.

By doing this, we can see where there are any hiccups. I am still working – but can now evaluate what is working with this plan, what suggestions can I provide to make sure out of the box thinking is occurring and that projects are executed and communicated properly.

Having a SUPER team

Super Team

At the end of the day, nothing can run without my team. I have a talented bunch who are dedicated to the cause and purpose of our organization. Each believes in what we do and the greater good. That is something money can’t buy. I can’t thank them enough for their eagerness and their ability to smile regardless of what stress is present.

Individual commitment to a group effort, that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.
Vince Lombardi

Now God, it’s all in your timing for this little boy! Whether it’s tonight or in 3 weeks – it’s reassuring to know that when I return to worklife – all will be good.

Working moms: what advice do you have in prepping for maternity leave?

34 Days – But REALLY Who Is Counting?

When are you due?

I now respond with the day count.

34 Days!

This is my first pregnancy I can honestly say I just want this kid to come when he is due. I have way too much to get done at work and prepping the family for little dude to make an early arrival. I do know by typing this, I might possibly be jinxing him into an early appearance.

The kids are just as anxious about this little guy arriving as Sean and I. Each night, E sings “Itsy Bitsy Spider” to my belly. He chose that song as the baby’s goodnight song. Z is still busy inviting anyone and everyone to rub my belly and feel the baby kick (even if the baby isn’t doing anything). My little niece McKenzie informed me today that the baby really should be a girl because she can’t take anymore boys around. Sorry McKz – can’t help you with that.

Prepping for Baby

Excited to become a BIG brother, E helped me put together the bassinet and bouncer (he had to wear his Bob the Builder hat to be able to help build). All infant electronics now have batteries. The nursery is finally coming together. The stacks of baby garb i’ve been given and collecting is slowly being organized.

Nesting in the Workplace

Work is full steam ahead. We are heading into event season, so this time more than ever is hectic. No more traveling, as Dr. P laid down the smack after my Blissdom trip. My maternity plan in place (watch for a post on developing this). It’s amazing how nesting sets in even in the workplace. I find myself compulsively going thru emails to make sure all bases are covered and scheduling meetings to develop plans to make sure all bows are tied and pretty. This time more than ever, makes me thankful for a team that is productive and can get things done.

34 days. 2 things are for sure.

  1. The next 34 days will NOT be boring.
  2. In the next 34 days our lives will be changed forever as we welcome our newest gift from God.

Both make me happy.

Are You a Manager or a Leader?

Management

When you hear the word "MANAGEMENT", what is your first thought?

That word just doesn’t sit well with me. It brings up thoughts of TPS reports and Michael Scott.

I’ve been in the work force for a decade now and have had my experience of both good and bad managers. The one distinct difference between the both is how they approach their job. Do they see their role as one of a manager or one of a leader?

I’m in a place in my career where my position falls under that "m" word. I would much rather put myself in the mindset of leading a team, rather than managing a team. Leading a team, empowers. Managing a team, drains.

What’s the difference between a manager and a leader? Check out this excerpt from MNHeadHunter.com.

10 Key Differences Between a Manager Mindset & Leadership Mindset:

The following list provides 10 Core Competencies that define key differences between leaders and managers. And, as you’ll see, leadership skills tend to be flexible, responsive to change, and future-oriented.

1. Leaders set a standard of excellence – Managers set a standard for performance

2. Leaders seek employee commitment – Managers seek employee compliance

3. Leaders are proactive – Managers are reactive

4. Leaders create change – Managers maintain the status quo

5. Leaders take risk – Managers are risk-averse

6. Leaders are passionate – Managers are controlling

7. Leaders can create followers – Managers have subordinates

8. Leaders use personal charisma – Managers rely on bestowed authority

9. Leaders give credit – Managers assign blame

10. Leaders care about what’s right – Managers care about being right

Invitations – Out With The Old, In With The New

My sister graciously offered to throw me a baby shower and wanted a list of addresses., I will be sending her email addresses.

While I love receiving a invitation in the mail – it no longer fits my style.

  • The invitation arrives, I place it on my refridgerator.
  • I forget to RSVP, making me feel like a total shmuck
  • Since, sending paper with date in my mind doesn’t mean put in phone calendar, I often forget the party details, so go fumbling around for the party deets

And then there is the e-invitation. Yes, they may not be as cute. Most are down right tacky, but all-in-all they just make sense.

  • The invite is sent to my email and I get it on my phone
  • I can RSVP "yes" or "no" with a few clicks
  • The date and time can sync to my phone calendar
  • I can see who else will be in attendance at the party
  • A REMINDER of the party automatically is sent to me
  • When I am driving around lost – I can reference the invite to find out the address
  • And the BEST part – it’s FREE!

I admit, I am totally guilty of spending $100′s of dollars on making invitaitons. I love the creative process. I see it as a project – but I came to the realization that it’s a waste. And to make matters worse, Mr. Post Office charges about 44 cents a piece to mail. That adds up, quickly.

. While Evite seems to have a good lead on the market – there application hasn’t changed all that much in the last several years. Wired put it best when saying:

Evite is great if you’re gonna party like it’s 1999 — because that’s where the site has been stuck for nearly a decade. An email arrives announcing a fete, but it’s short on deets. You’re forced to click to an ad-choked Web page, then another to RSVP, and then back to the first to see the info again. That faint sound you hear? It’s coins tumbling into the pockets of media conglomerate IAC/InterActiveCorp, which acquired the site in 2003. And that, of course, is the point — all that clicking means dollars for them.

Here are a few free alternatives to Evite:

This is an interesting concept, Paperless Post – nice looking cards, decent cost – but not the advertising.

Out with the old, in with the new – newsspapers, magazines, giftcards, photos, invitations – what’s going digital next?

Living a Good Story

I love me some Donald Miller!

He’s an awesome writer, he is real about his life, faith and I love that he is published by my employer.

So most of us are getting ready to start back to our normal pre-holiday routines tomorrow. And with the year change comes the on set of goals. Everyone is in goal setting mode, myself included.

Donald has a different approach. What if rather than setting goals, you planned your story. I like this. This makes sense to me – plus adds an element of fun and a twist of adventure (and so much more entertaining than “be a good mom”)

Check out his latest post: Living a Good Story, an Alternative to New Years Resolutions

Here are a few points Donald wrote that have me thinking on the story lines that I’ll be writing to live this year:

  • A story involves a person that wants something and is willing to overcome conflict to get it.
  • If you plan a story this year, instead of just simple goals, your life will be more exciting, more meaningful and more memorable.
  • Stories give goals context.
  • In a story, the character wants something.
  • Envision a climatic scene. Once you have that climactic scene in mind, you’ll know the scenes it takes to get there.
  • Characters don’t change without being forced to change.

What story are you writing for your life to tell in 2010?

P.S. If you haven’t picked up A Million Miles in a Thousand Years, do so.  I started this today,  fan freaking-tabulous. Read the first 30 pages here.

Basecamp, How Happy & Productive You Make Me

As we close the year and a slew of new things are upon the digital team at work, I threw my hands in the air and said a quick little prayer for some help.

Jesus must of been listening because a light appeared and my computer instantly typed 37signals.com. Okay, just kidding – but in all seriousness 37 Signals project management application, Basecamp has made my week peachy.

A few years back, I heard Jason Fried talk at SXSWi about 37 Signals. I loved the idea of what they were doing as a company. I followed the blog, but for some reason just never looked into the applications. Last week, in realizing how unproductive it was to be managing a few google doc spreadsheets – I asked the team to hop on board of a month long test of Basecamp to see if that would get us going.

Week 1 was a success. What we are needing is task management as well as a collaboration point. The team is working on various project – some with rhyme and reason but for the most part each is a separate task requiring separate details. We have split the multiple functions that are normally performed into lists and then started plugging in the tasks as they come in.

As an added bonus, I can now easily print on 1 page without morphing 3 google doc spreadsheets into 1 to see what the team is working on – which is extremely helpful when in meetings and needing to prioritize.

If you are looking for an easy-to-do task management solution, most definately check out Basecamp.

If you want to drool over a company that thinks different & knows how to make small business work –  check out what Jason Fried has done with 37 Signals. His work philosophy is genius. Empower the employees, no (to minimal) meetings, and work your own hours. Love that.
