Buried in Haiti rubble, U.S. dad wrote goodbyes -- But with iPhone info, he treated his injuries and was rescued after 65 hours
Woolley had taken refuge in an elevator shaft, where he used an iPhone first-aid app to treat a compound fracture of his leg and a cut on his head. He had already used his digital SLR camera’s focusing light to illuminate his surroundings, and taken pictures of the wreckage to help find a safe place to wait to be rescued — or to die.
Writing the notes to his wife and children wasn’t easy, the deeply religious man said.
“Boy, I cried,” he admitted. “Obviously, no one wants to come to that point. I also didn’t want to just get found after having some time — God gave me some time — to think and to pray and to come to grips with the reality. I wanted to use that time to do everything I could for my family. If that could be surviving, get out, then I would. If it could be just to leave some notes that would help them in life, I would do that.”
Meet Prima Bella -Is this the new answer for morning sickness?
I’m sitting in the OBGYN’s office and having to take this glucose test, I feel aweful. Morning sickness ended at 18 weeks for me, but something in the office was making me sick. After telling the nurse, she said – "let’s try something…"
She proceeds to put a glob of something on my wrist, asks if I am allergic to latex and then straps a wrist like device to me called a Prima Bella. It’s pulsating and after 30 minutes I can say that I don’t feel sick anymore. Crazy.
I feel a small electrical charge on my wrist, in a rythmatic pattern, similar to a TENS unit – but that’s it.
PrimaBella™, the only FDA cleared prescription non-invasive medical device intended for treatment of nausea and vomiting due to pregnancy (NVP). PrimaBella is an innovative prescription neuromodulation device worn on the underside of the wrist to reduce nausea and vomiting symptoms during pregnancy.
While sick for the first 18 weeks, I lived on Zofran in order to maintain sanity. Should I venture into pregnancy again and meet up with my old friend “Morning Sickness”, I’ll definately give the Prima Bella a whirl.
How often do you step out of your box in thinking? What if you knocked down the walls that surround you for a few minutes and think "what if?".
This past weekend I was apart of a break-though – out of the box thought that turned reality. The results were out of this world. Not only from a company stand point, but from a customer and an employee stand point. New ideas that we never would of thought of have resulted because of one BIG out of the box idea.
What BIG idea are you saying "no" to? What if you said "yes"? The worse thing that could happen is that you would fail, which would mean you would have to pick yourself right up and start again. Just sayin.
Tweets, blogs and Facebook are to be applauded for the success of the Red Cross’ successful fundraising campaign for Haiti. The most recent number I could find is that the Red Cross has raised over $22,000,000 by having donors donate $10 by texting HAITI to 90999. The simplicity of spreading the word and of actually donating is triggering thousands to react and give.
Here is a list of other non-profits jumping in on the mobile giving campaign for Haiti:
American Red Cross: Text the word “Haiti” to 90999 to donate $10
Yéle Foundation (founded by Wyclef Jean): Text the word “Yele” to 501501 to donate $5; Text the word “Yele10” or “YeleTen” to 501501 to donate $10.

Absolutely BRILLIANT!
Last year I was involved in a fund raiser for Hoops of Hope. The team at the office spent a day utilizing our online profiles tweeting and posting to Facebook to raise money to help build an Africa school. In the 24 hours we were tweeting, over $4,000 was raised. We only had a handful of us tweeting (5 or so), but it worked – and we exceeded our goal of $1,000.
If you are involved with a non-profit and are not harnessing the power of social media – get in the game. It’s not too late, there is money to raise and the best, cheapest way to go viral is by utilizing the power of social media.
While, McDonalds isn’t somewhere this family frequents outside of roadtrips – kudos to the Ronald for giving us digital moms and dads FREE wifi!
McDonalds recently rolled out free wifi at more than 15,000 of it’s location. With the help of AT&T, McDonalds has nixed the service charge of $2.95 for 2 hours of internet access. This move is hoping to help the McD position their image as a hang-out and to continue their quest to be competitive with high-end coffee shops (a.k.a. STARBUCKS).
Life is stressful. Being a full-time working mom is crazy. Pregnancy is exhausting. Work is non-stop.
But that stuff does not matter, that stuff will pass. And that stuff… is well – just stuff.
The earthquake (and aftershocks) happened in Haiti. My heart hurts. Reality hits. My so-called “problems” are nothing.
There are people suffering, dying, in trouble – if not dead. It’s days like today that I wish fairy tales could come true. If I only had that magic wand and that bippiity, boppity, boo would make it all better.
Since fairy tales are only that, I do know the one thing I can do and that is pray. Join me in praying for those who are hurting, those who are helping and that this disaster will result in something positive somewhere.
Life is too short. This disaster is too big. God help Haiti.
Psalm 37:7
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him.
How can you help? Pray. Donate to World Vision. or Red Cross by texting “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10.
Imagine tonight without shelter. No light or water or toilets or food. You can’t find your child. Death surrounds. Reality in Haiti. Pray. – @flowerdust
When you hear the word "MANAGEMENT", what is your first thought?
That word just doesn’t sit well with me. It brings up thoughts of TPS reports and Michael Scott.
I’ve been in the work force for a decade now and have had my experience of both good and bad managers. The one distinct difference between the both is how they approach their job. Do they see their role as one of a manager or one of a leader?
I’m in a place in my career where my position falls under that "m" word. I would much rather put myself in the mindset of leading a team, rather than managing a team. Leading a team, empowers. Managing a team, drains.
What’s the difference between a manager and a leader? Check out this excerpt from MNHeadHunter.com.
10 Key Differences Between a Manager Mindset & Leadership Mindset:
The following list provides 10 Core Competencies that define key differences between leaders and managers. And, as you’ll see, leadership skills tend to be flexible, responsive to change, and future-oriented.
1. Leaders set a standard of excellence – Managers set a standard for performance
Rev Run, inspire me? Who would of thunk that the Run DMC front man would be someone I’d care to hear from. I started following him on Twitter several months ago, and have to say he his 140 characters have changed the course of my day many times. Follow him on Twitter and be inspired. @revrunwisdom
My sister graciously offered to throw me a baby shower and wanted a list of addresses., I will be sending her email addresses.
While I love receiving a invitation in the mail – it no longer fits my style.
The invitation arrives, I place it on my refridgerator.
I forget to RSVP, making me feel like a total shmuck
Since, sending paper with date in my mind doesn’t mean put in phone calendar, I often forget the party details, so go fumbling around for the party deets
And then there is the e-invitation. Yes, they may not be as cute. Most are down right tacky, but all-in-all they just make sense.
The invite is sent to my email and I get it on my phone
I can RSVP "yes" or "no" with a few clicks
The date and time can sync to my phone calendar
I can see who else will be in attendance at the party
A REMINDER of the party automatically is sent to me
When I am driving around lost – I can reference the invite to find out the address
And the BEST part – it’s FREE!
I admit, I am totally guilty of spending $100′s of dollars on making invitaitons. I love the creative process. I see it as a project – but I came to the realization that it’s a waste. And to make matters worse, Mr. Post Office charges about 44 cents a piece to mail. That adds up, quickly.
. While Evite seems to have a good lead on the market – there application hasn’t changed all that much in the last several years. Wired put it best when saying:
Evite is great if you’re gonna party like it’s 1999 — because that’s where the site has been stuck for nearly a decade. An email arrives announcing a fete, but it’s short on deets. You’re forced to click to an ad-choked Web page, then another to RSVP, and then back to the first to see the info again. That faint sound you hear? It’s coins tumbling into the pockets of media conglomerate IAC/InterActiveCorp, which acquired the site in 2003. And that, of course, is the point — all that clicking means dollars for them.
